Thanks guys, I still really appreciate the effort involved in the work on the plane and the behind the scenes stuff, such as posting to the internet. It really makes my day to see a new post come in!

Zac
Interesting as always. Thank you. Are you aware of what National Markings NZ 2423 will carry? Because it is unique to NZ, the 'Pacific Roundel with side-bars' that the P-51's carried on arrival here would seem to be both 'authentic to type' and a candidate for consideration, but then again...
Thank you.

Because it is unique to NZ, the 'Pacific Roundel with side-bars' that the P-51's carried on arrival here The RNZAF Mustangs never wore RNZAF Pacific roundels, they arrived with factory applied stars and bars. They retained them till they came out of storage in the 1950's and the then standard roundel was applied over the stars. Here's a shot of S&S Worker Bill Fitzharding-Jones doing just that: Air Force Museum of New Zealand Photo

I often say "this week Brendon has a bumper update" but this really is one, including a breakdown of who's been doing what at Ohakea. Buckle your seatbelts folks, it's a biggie. We were discussing this on the Facebook post about the F-51 desigination. Mike Nicholls pointed out that the P for Pursuit was changed to F for Fighter. Of course I was a bit confused as I knew this was post war (hence in the Korean war the Mustang was the F-51) yet the RNZAF Mustangs were from WW2. The date explains it. 1953. So the Air Force must have had a service bulletin about this and got sent the upgrade kit, I presume from North American or associated supplier. Pretty neat. Oh and May 11th is special.............9 years later I was born!

Jealous, that's the guts of the IFF transponder, all the bits we're missing from our one.
