Personnel Casualties: The crew of NZ plane 507 - Pilot - F/O R.D. Gardner. Navigator - P/O C. Nicholls Gunner - P/O H.H. Sheather are believed killed in action.
Attack Tactics: Approached Target over East Coast of New Britain near the Warangoi River, making right-hand turn at 13,500' - going into high speed approach - then turning left - peeling off at 9000' at SE end of Runway - and releasing bombs at 1500'/3000' - retiring over Ataliklikun Bay.
Summary of Results: Of the 64 x 500 lb. bombs carried, the following results are reported. 13 bombs confirmed direct hits. 24 bombs reported direct hits. 30 bombs unobserved. 9 bombs jettisoned. Of the 8 x 100 and 4 x 250 lb. bombs carried, all were dropped on Runway but were unobserved. Huts in Tavili Plantation and at Ataliklikun Bay, and the dispersal area, were strafed. The Runway was well-covered by dust, smoke, and debris after the attack.
Weather: En route - 5/10ths scattered cloud, with front on St. George Channel. Over Target - 4/10ths strato-cumulus.
Observations: 1. Anti-Aircraft Fire: The known Heavy, Automatic & M/G Positions were active, firing meagrely and inaccurately; 2 Autos NW end of Runway, 4 or 5 Heavies North of SE end of Runway, 6 M/Gs in centre of South side of Runway, 1 x 105 mm South of SE end of Runway. The Autos and Dual Navy guns West of NW end of Runway were firing meagrely but accurately. It is believed that the Naval guns were responsible for the loss of 1 TBF. 1 New M/G Position was reported in the Tavili Plantation. 2. Enemy Shipping: None. 3. Enemy Activity: None. 4. Reports on Co-ordinated Attack: 1 possible SBD bomb on heavy gun position North end of Runway. 5. Condition of Target Before & After Attack: It is reported that the whole of the Runway including the concrete, has been camouflaged a green colour, making it very difficult to pick up at a distance. The Target had a good distribution of bombs over the whole area. 6. Miscellaneous Reports: 1. A Friendly Convoy of 2 AKs and 5 DDs was observed heading South, 20 miles off Buka. 2. F/O H.S.R. Cameron's Report on NZ Plane 507 lost over Vunakanau Runway. "I was diving about 50' behind F/O Gardner, & about 100' to his right, at about 5000' altitude, when he was hit in both wings simultaneously. There was very little smoke from the bursts but there was a heavy flash. Pieces flew from F/O Gardner's aircraft and as it flicked over I saw that the port wing was shot completely away at about half its length, and the starboard wing was shot away from about the inside of the roundel. The pilot was hunched over in the cockpit. The aircraft turned twice and when I last saw it, it was going down vertically. My radioman is able to confirm my statement. (Signed) H.S.R. Cameron." From further interrogation it would appear that this A/C was hit simultaneously in both wings at about 6000', went into a spin, and crashed on the SE end of Vunakanau Runway, exploding and bursting into fire.

Miscellaneous Reports: 1. 3 Unidentified Ships, possibly DDs, were observed heading North, off Buka Passage. 2. The general opinion was that insufficient numbers of SBDs were sent on the Strike. At no time during the TBF attack was there any visible cessation of A/A fire.
Pilot Officer' W.J. Shannahan's Report: on N.Z. plane No. 2541, Lost after attack on Lakunai Runway: "I was Turret Gunner in Aircraft No. 2542, and was in the last A/C over the Target Area. I did a Strafing Attack from the port side then swung the turret over to starboard. Just then I noticed F/O Bailey's A/C about 200' below and 400 yds. distant on the port side, at 1000' altitude. Th A/C appeared to be going very slowly and this made me pay particular attention. On further observation I noticed that he was losing height and speed, and his Undercarriage came down. He continued in a shallow glide for a few seconds, then nosed over at about 500' altitude, and dived straight into the sea, about 300 yds. South of Sulphur Point. The A/C did not go into a spin, but both wings hit water simultaneously and the A/C disappeared. About two seconds later the tail unit broke the surface and then slid back into the water. The A/C did not explode on impact." "On noticing the A/C crash, I called my captain, F/O D.J. Fyfe, on the I.C.S., and told him an A/C had crashed - to turn round and go back. We turned and went back to the position where the A/C was seen to disappear, with the object of dropping rubber dinghies. The only visible sign of the crash was a slight disturbance in the water and an oil slick. No wreckage or survivors appeared on the surface of the water." "We circled the position twice, but were compelled to retire, owing to intense A/A from the Gun Positions on Matupi Island, Praed and Raluana Points, and North of Vulcan Crater. On retiring, my captain called Baker 30, the PVI search plane, and notified the pilot that an A/C had crashed into the water not far from the R/W. The captain of Baker 30 replied that he would go to investigate, and was seen to head in that direction."
