Chuck Yeager, World War II ace, daring test pilot and legendary West Virginian, has died.
Chuck Yeager His place in history was secured in 1947 when he became the first pilot in history to blow past the speed of sound in level flight. Yeager’s daring and swagger personified “The Right Stuff” associated with later test pilots who became the first astronauts in the American space program.
His wife, Victoria, announced Yeager’s death on Twitter and highlighted his “legacy of strength, adventure and patriotism.” She did not state a cause of death. Yeager was 97.
I'll watch 'The Right Stuff ' on DVD tonight.

Sad to see. His autobiography is a great read.

Very proud to say I have actually met the great man, he came into the local post office that my wife and I used to run a few years back. He walked through the door as he had heard there were a few aeroplane related things to have a look at. He took the time to have a chat a true privilege and an honour and a really nice guy, RIP Mr Yeager.

I didn't get to meet him, but I did attend an IMAX showing of the Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag movie where he gave a brief talk as guest of honour during Avalon 2007. A really interesting speaker, I almost wish they could have done away with the movie and had him continue speaking instead.
I must admit, my first thought when I heard the news yesterday was, I hope it wasn't COVID! Curse that virus!
