Awesome, Well done to Pioneer Aero! I note that the fuselage will be restored here while the wings remain in the US for restoration...

I presume the fuselage will be sent to the US to meet her wings.....unless the plan is to send them over so Pioneer can fine tune fitting. I know which one I'd like.

The old Airfix 1/72 Dauntless with RNZAF decals was a model kit my Dad built with me when I was 10 or 11 so the type's long been a favourite of mine. This has been fantastic news to read and digest. I've long hoped to see a Dauntless restored and/or flown here again. There's a webinar tomorrow morning (0600 for us) all about its recovery and that of the other Lake Michigan aircraft so I have my alarm set. Thank you Jerry and MAM and bravo Pioneer!

The webinar was titled "The Rescue of the Once Lost World War II Navy Aircraft from Lake Michigan" with Taras Lyssenko, General Manager of A and T Recovery, hosted by MAM director Keegan Chetwynd as well as Jerry Yagen. It was about the lake recoveries, as the title suggests, but contained precious little info about Dauntless 36175. They alluded to this aircraft being four months old and in its first (and only) paint scheme at the time of its loss.
Also Jerry teased they have a few exciting projects that he said will make us go "How did you get THAT?!" which will be made public over the coming year.

For those followers of this post. The aircraft will be rebuilt to fly at Ardmore, the wings, engine and prop will be sent to us to fit here. In anticipation , at this stage we have not discussed paint scheme so we have no idea as to the paint and markings the client wants. Yes we would also be keen to display it here but again at this early stage this has not been spoken about. Worse case scenario for those interested, get to Ardmore when it test flys.

On a similar note, any hints for the P-40 test flights? I got lucky with the P-39.

Oh that's awesome news. Huh. I didn't think there would be any other rare aircraft operated by the RNZAF (or anyone else for that matter) to see in little old New Zealand. Pioneer: "Hold my Beer." Certainly have to look at getting up to see her fly.

The easiest solution would be to paint it in the customers scheme and then, if it stays in NZ for a while ,overpaint the markings with RNZAF ones using temporary wash off-able paint as they used to do with the I-16s at Wanaka. Apart from the type of paint that's what would have been done to our original allocation. When it's ready to go to the owner wash of the temporary markings, and everybody's happy, easy!

I think I remember coverage of the Dauntless arriving at Pioneer, but nothing on MAM blog/FB or Pioneer blog/FB. Where haven't I thought of?
