I have recently acquired the medals of the subject pilot born in Timaru and will be returning them to Newman's family in the near future. He trained as a P in NZ, flew with No 75 (RAF) Sqn, was shot down over Holland and survived as did his crew, became a POW (and attempted an escape(s)), returned to the UK at the end of the war and lived a good part of his latter life in Old Catton, Norfolk. Not being very familiar with using Pro-boards, my pitiful attempts to locate any information on these boards (if any) has been nil to date. If anyone knows of any posted information on this pilot and his exploits such posts I would be grateful for your guidance. Ian D. Martyn Medals Reunited NZ www.medalsreunitednz.co.nz

H D Newman was one of the two survivors of a group of 12 NZ-trained pilots who embarked for the UK to take up short service commission in the RAF on approximately 23rd February 1940 (ship unknown), and arrived in UK on 13th April. The other survivor was C K Saxelby. This information from Errol Martyn's For Your Tomorrow, Volume 3, page 589. The fate of the other ten men can be found in Volumes 1 and 2 of this series, and details of their respective fates as well as brief biographic details in Vol 3.

The medals came from James Clayton whom I believe you have been in contact with when he first advertised for descendant contact. James is writing some background for me just from his knowledge as a neighbour of "Tim's" which should fill a few gaps, partic his employment post war etc. Many thanks for your contribution, Ian
