I have been asked by Sammy Clark if a pilot named Ray Cooney is still around. He apparently flew the in the 1969 London to Sydney Air Race with David Grey and Sammy's father in 1969. Sammy thought that Ray may have moved to Cambridge some years ago. I have no info sadly. Sammy thinks Ray was ex-Air Force. Does anyone here know of Ray? He'd probably be in his 80's.

Dave Can't help you with any current knowledge of Matthew (Ray) Cooney but anyone who knows his sister, Marion Cooney, who I believe was married to Mike Foster ex Auckland Aero Club many years ago, may be able to get an update from her. The Cooney family were from Beach Rd, Papakura. Ray certainly did crew Dave Greys DH89 along with Sammy's dad (Jack Moon ex SafeAir in the 1960's) in the London-Sydney Air race. I don't remember if Ray was ex Air Force but if he was it must have been for a very brief time. He also ferried the two DH89's to Australia firstly ZK-ALB in June 1974, and later, in January 1975, ZK-BCP. He also worked for Jim Bergman as an Instructor at the Auckland Flying School in 1968.

Sammy may remember I gave him a number of slides of the DH89 at Griffith NSW that I took on the morning of the last leg of the race to Sydney, when Sammy was doing a summary of his dad's life a few years ago.
