I am currently building several wartime central solomon islands airfields for FSX (Steam Edition) and need to find the codenames for several airfields i.e Henderson was "Cactus"
Green Island "Bleacher" I did have a 1944 air pilot for the area which detailed those names, but gave it to a museum. Can anyone help?

Correct, and Dagwood was another. I have seen them as call signs in movement orders for RNZAF aircraft.
I have seen a massive list of these code names somewhere but I am trying to recall where.
Others are: Espiritu Santo was code named Button by the US Navy but was universally known by the Kiwis as Buttons, plural.
Roses was the codename for Port Vila.

I love reading that list of code words.
Auckland had several code names, my favourite being FULCRUM. Others being HERMIT and YELP, haha.
Wellington was code named KEYRING, LONGBOW, and hilariously JERK.

The only real trouble with that US Navy list of code-names is that it does NOT include ANY information as to the actual relevant dates of use of these codewords, nor the intended user of such codewords. I know that some were intended purely for the purpose of destination codes (mainly for shipping, but air travel may also have used them). I am fairly certain that different parts of the military had their own codes, which may explain fact that large numbers of locations had multiple codes assigned to them. There could also have been cases where there was wholesale cancellation of groups of codes, and replacement by new codes as a security measure. Others may have been assigned as tactical code names for a specific operation, after completion of which all codes might be cancelled. David D

Your summation of the US Navy list is correct David. Even in modern times when I was in the mob, codenames for some exercises/operations changed during the course of planing and execution. If you look at that US Navy list and the number of different codenames for NZ Locations there are some crackers NZ="JERK" for example!

These days we would just claim a computer randomly generated the nickname but in 1940s someone had a sense of humour or a grudge.
