I look at the photos that are on the Air Force Museum of New Zealand website regularly. Often the subject of the photo, is an "unknown airman". This got me thinking.
1. Is there any privacy issues if you were to name the "unknown airman" on this forum 2. Would the museum be interested in putting names to individuals where they have been listed as "unknown airman"
I am sure that the museum would require some sort of check and balance system to have confidence in the attribution of the name.
Comments please, particularly those closest to the inner workings of the museum and the forum.

I have offered corrections to those photos and generally you see almost immediate action. I think they would appreciate having the names. I did exactly this within the past week.
They would certainly check for correctness though.

Where I can, I have given additional details to Mathew (Keeper of Photographs). These include names of individuals, names of groups (sports teams), correction of information presented as detail with a photo. It is then Mathew's decision to use or not the information. To date, no rejections. Mathew appreciates the updates, which go towards making the archive more accurate and relevant. Many of us on this forum were present when history was being made and I personally want to ensure history records the right information.

Yes Matthew welcomes any extra information and names. I have sent him a number of emails over the past year and a bit with additional info and corrections.
I have actually been thinking lately we should set up a thread here with faces of unknown airmen and airwomen to see if anyone can put names to them. I am sure the hive mind here would add a lot. I'll ask Matthew if he is OK with that idea.

I emailed Matthew yesterday and before I woke up this morning, there is one less unknown airman on the museum web site.

Just to let all know, I'm in discussion with Matthew about this and we are working on a plan to make this happen as a regular thing here on the forum.
He also mentioned that he doesn't mind people emailing him with names of unknown people in a photo, so long as they can support it with an explanation like “I was on that exercise…..” “this person was in my trade…”. This supporting evidence will give him that much more confidence in the information.
