Interesting that the Waikato Times seems to have had a premonition here, as the Royal New Zealand Air Force did not exist till the 6th of March 1934.

Well spotted Dave H! Also note that he is listed with Army rank rather than RAF, which is a bit odd, as the NZPAF (and presume also the NZAF(T)) changed over to RAF ranks by about 1931 (check this with NZ Gazette, etc), or it may have been published in (NZ) Army Orders.

It could be a case that the newspaper saw F/Lt and expanded it themselves with the wrong conclusion.

The switch to RAF ranks occurred in December 1929 "Royal New Zealand Air Force J.M. Ross page 19" 'In December 1929 RAF ranks and methods of organisation were introduced into the NZPAF in place of the Army titles and practices which had bee used up to then; and in April 1930 the RAF pay code was introduced.'
