This would be a great opportunity for a NZ decal maker like Ventura to do a sheet of NZ-related colour schemes, such as depicting some of the ones with nose art at the School of General Reconnaissance and Navigation (at Omaka/Bell Block), such as Dopey Donkey, Toro the Bull, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Ali-Gator, etc. Although Disney corporation may want a cut of the profits...

Perhaps Ventura could also include an RAAF sheet for some of the anti-sub machines in camo as well as well as the Evans Head and New Guinea based Ansons....

Wow, how did they hold up in New Guinea? I'd think the fabric would not last well there?

Probably lasted about as well as our Vincents, one DH 60 Moth plus that gaggle of DH 86s and DH 89s in Fiji I reckon! Of course a lot of Allied (and enemy) aircraft in tropical theatres had fabric-covered control surfaces, and some had even greater areas of fabric, such as Wirraways, Corsairs and Catalinas. The most unfortunate case of Allied fabric-covered aircraft in the PNG area may have been the Auster Mk. IIIs of 17 AOP Flight, which seem to have been shipped up to Bougainville in early 1945 without being given a proper airframe inspection by any responsible engineering person beforehand. Apparently the Flight was grounded for some time as many of the aircraft had to be pretty well completely refabriced (and have much perspex renewed) before they could be considered airworthy. Perhaps somebody got a rap over the knuckles, or maybe not!

Would there be anything left of an Auster if you had to replace the fabric and perspex...an engine and a few sticks?

Something like that! And that is a true story, came from either the RAAF official history, or the appropriate Army volume.

Young Jason here has one of the Borneo Auster III. Its the one that was flying when the Japanese Surrender Delegation arrived and proceeded to beat up the area. From memory "Papar Tiger". Shall ask him if he knows. Saratoga.....ouch !

I would love to see an airworthy Anson here in Oz. Played such an important (and mostly overlooked) role. Guessing a model is a good start...anyone have influence with Ventura for a combined or separate RNZAF/RAAF sheet/s ?

Guessing a model is a good start...anyone have influence with Ventura for a combined or separate RNZAF/RAAF sheet/s ? I think that for RAAF examples Red Roo will probably have some subjects in mind. I know that Gary, Ed & co did some time in Australian Archives and elsewhere digging information out on Australian Ansons. Also aware that the chosen RAAF subject for the Airfix Anson as currently depicted is incorrect based off the Red Roo guys research, along with that done by Ian Baker. Airfix current RAAF subject profile is based off some very old Pentland profile artwork that has been since proven to be incorrect - material that was declassified or came to light some year after he did the original profile.

I think there is a restoration project ongoing for an airworthy Anson Mk. 1 in Australia, is there not?

Guilty as charged (offence, subject of thread drift); but it was triggered by your previous post, with best of intentions! David D

It's all good David. It wasn't the drift that was a shock, just that it wasn't Baz, hahaha

Hmmmm, someone took the topic from model Ansons to Austers, and Baz hasn't even posted here yet! I wondered why I was being singled out for going off topic! Yeah apart from similar construction and one less engine it's a big leap! Is the Borneo Auster III flying? Back to the Anson that does look fantastic and I look forward to it appearing on here in RNZAF markings especially.
