I note in the video they taxied with the outboards shutdown to reduce the chances of stirring up the ash which in one shot is still thick at the edge of the seal The Aussie C-17 brought in a little digger, there is a photo of it clearing the apron. Don't know if they are leaving it behind for the locals to use. It will be less useful for clearing away from the seal however.

One question that pops into my mind is why did they not send the Manawanui to survey the ports? I thought that kind of thing was in her scope. Is she not available? Maybe part of sending Wellington is that she can take a chopper.

Also, and kind of related: I’ve thought for a long time we should have a hospital ship, and that it should basically live up in the islands and even SE Asia. It should be paid for, at least in part, from the foreign aid budget, and would be far more effective at helping and at soft power than the likes of $12 million women’s centres in PNG.
When I’m voted in as King it will be a priority purchase for the New Fleet.

HMNZS Canterbury (9,000t) left Devonport last night, includes two NH-90s. HMNZS Aotearoa (26,000t) will come back when Canterbury arrives, as she has to go to Antarctica. Japan is also sending JS Osumi (8,800t LST with 2x CH-47) in addition to the 2x C-130H UK included some aid on HMAS Adelaide, and is sending HMS Spey (2,000t OPV) from Tahiti. And the DDG USS Sampson (9,200t was here during the Kaikoura quake) as well (presumably with a Seahawk). www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-to-support-tonga-tsunami-response-with-aid-and-royal-navy-ship

Possibly because of the relationship they have with Australia and our arrogant attitude towards America for the last 30-40 years.

Noting that we are only classed as "other allies" in the INDOPACOM release above I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the precise wording of one tweet, which seems to have been the only comms put out by the US on this so far. Note it is a US Federal holiday weekend. Wouldn't be surprised if the USN is working via the command facilities on HMAS Adelaide. I've seen mention that Sampson is now there, and that a US Coast Guard cutter is on route

The comments re the American statement remind me when I first visited the Pentagon back in about 2003. I was being taken along the ANZUS corridor which had an assortment of photos, storyboards, uniforms, weapons etc. relating to our past relationship which was pretty cool and was, I thought, very NZ heavy compared to the Australian content. As we walked along my escort said to me, 'Sir, this is when you were on our side', just had to chuckle. Otherwise though the people that I worked with there had enormous respect for our forces.

Apparently about 4% of the crew most of whom are asymptomatic. Believe they are in negotiations with Tonga as to how to move forward. From some txt I have received they may isolate all in a separate part of the ship, monitor then release as reqd after further tests

Not sure of the exact reason it went on HMNZS Wellington but The quick reaction hydrographic team at the base can deploy on any ship or be airlifted to any location rapidly. Everything they require is in travel boxes ready to go.

A NH-90 from HMNZS Canterbury has managed to get comms techs to Kao Island, which proved a challenge due to weather.
