Great to see the air force getting to show off their aircraft, lets hope they can continue and grow the displays. I note in all the timetables they make the statement they will be conducting under Covid requirements, does this mean they will be flying 2m apart? just kidding.

The Wings Over New Zealand Show 257 is now online. The Air Force Heritage Flight is the newest unit of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and in this episode we hear from its Flight Commander, Squadron Leader Mike Williams. The Ohakea-based unit consists of a mix of the RNZAF’s current Beechcraft Texan II training aircraft and a variety of WWII warbirds. They have worked up a display team routine for airshows, and also will be making special flypasts around New Zealand. This unit replaces the now defunct RNZAF Historic Flight, and takes the goals of that previous unit to the next level. As well as a way to engage today’s younger airmen and airwomen with their service’s heritage, the Flight will also be showing the flag to the public, and hoping to inspire the next generation of RNZAF aviators and engineers. The AFHF’s first major event happened just a few days ago when the four-ship formation of the Spitfire, Avenger and two Texans flew from Ohakea to Christchurch and back again, flying over as many towns and communities along the way as possible so that people could see them. It was a huge success with a massive engagement from the public who turned out to watch, wave, photograph and video the AFHF flying over. Their next big outing will be in two days’ time on Saturday the 9th of April 2022, when they fly north from Ohakea to Whenuapai over loads of cities, towns and communities along the way, and then back again on a different route. Mike also talks about his own career in the RNZAF, what is happening with some of the aircraft that were with the old Historic Flight, and also he goes into scary detail of his major engine failure and belly landing in Harvard NZ1015, which was the catalyst for the change of direction to create this new unit. cambridgeairforce.org.nz/WONZShow/2022/04/wonz-257-the-air-force-heritage-flight/Here is a video version

From the AFHF Facebook page: The crews are doing their final flight planning today. Are you planning to see us tomorrow, Saturday 9 April? Tell us which aircraft you're looking forward to seeing the most as we conduct our 85th Birthday flight around the North Island. Is it the Spitfire? The Avenger? Maybe it's the T-6C Texan? Please find the full itinerary here: m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=120506423916965&id=100078728232300

Heard them coming and saw them fly over Hamilton airport and city from home with my binoculars. Certainly wasn't a fly-past; just a fly-over at 1000 feet. A significant milestone but a very cursory showing. Didn't rattle any roof tiles.

Pity the Heritage Flight is not planning a Southern tour at the moment, all the neighbours were out as the two hercs unexpectedly did a low pass over Dunedin last weekend so I had to explain to most what sort of aircraft and where from. Had all sorts of theories from those watching till I spoke up although I had the reason wrong as well, never realised 85th birthday till watching the news later, should probably have known having been ot OH for the 50th and the airshow.

It was awesome to see the AFHF over Cambridge. The weather was perfect and there was a huge turnout of people to see them after I had advertised it on the local Cambridge community pages. What a great day.
Welcome Winny, I think a southern tour will come eventually. This is only the beginning of this wonderful new venture, and already they have covered a huge chunk of the country.

A significant milestone but a very cursory showing. Didn't rattle any roof tiles. As you can likely imagine there is a massive amount of work involved in gaining permissions to do even 1000 foot flypasts over almost 70 towns, cities and communities? Going lower is just never going to happen. And the 1000 feet is still a fine level to see the Flight from the ground, plus at that level a lot more people will see them.

That was a question on my lips, do we have any idea of the proposed regularity of this happening? From what I gathered from S/L Mike Williams during my interview for the current WONZ Show, these events will happen when they are on their way to airshows (low level flyovers of towns on the way, including diversions to take in centres not on the direct route), and for other special events like Air Force graduations, perhaps memorial events, or special days at certain places. The best thing to do is follow their Facebook page and keep up to date on upcoming flights. www.facebook.com/AirForceHeritageFlightNZAnd for those not on Facebooke, Mike and I will make sure this thread gets the info too, so maybe bookmark the thread.

"gaining permissions"
For this sort of thing you don't do "permissions", you just do it! Repercussions would be unlikely.
As a nation we are absolutely ruining our pioneer and adventurist spirit with compliance to everything! That is not the way to a free society. What will our "heritage" snapshot of 2022 (for any topic) look like to future generations? We older members have to stand up for OUR NZ heritage values to provide good mentoring to those younger. Otherwise each successive generation just pussy-foots their way into blind compliance and oblivion.

Weather superb today for those like myself waiting for the formation at RNZAF Base Whenuapai. At least 200 or so lined the fence line to see the formation fly overhead and the T-6C break while trialing smoke as they split away from the formation and landed followed by the TBM circling overhead dropping its landing gear and landing .The Spitfire stayed on the eastern side so did not feature much in the break over base. Compared to others who have seen the formation only briefly , the public would have been satisfied with the arrival of the AFHF and have a good view of the aircraft.

Well I'm sitting on the deck looking out to sea where I will see them fly down from Okura, Torbay, Browns Bay, and on to North Head. My air Band radio receiver is locked onto WP 134.5. Bring it on...

I stayed close to home in Pukete, Hamilton and just walked down the Waikato river banks. Quite a crowd had gathered. The formation came in from the South and passed quite close. I was further North than the city centre so they were " smoke-off" by the time they got to me. Approach Level Bye, y'all. Photos were a bit average but I liked the sun-glint on the canopies in the last one Just a smug little footnote. In the crowd of watchers that I stood with (socially distanced and masked of course), I was the first to spot the formation and yell "There they are!". All those years standing on the judging grid at Club and RNZAC competitions is great practice for spotting distant aircraft approaching Isn't that right flyinkiwi ?
