I have produced these stereo anaglyphs from old NZAM images of Auckland from 1940, 1950 and 1972. If anyone has an old pair of red-cyan 3D glasses they should be able to see Mechanics bay and the various flying boats through the ages in stereo 3D. (apologies to anybody who doesn't have these glasses as the images might be rather headache inducing!) The first image appears to show ZK-AMA moored offshore in 1940. 1940_mechanics by Harry Follas, on Flickr The 2nd image shows a couple of Solents on the brabee pontoons while a PBY Catalina is on the hardstand in 1950. 1950_mechanics by Harry Follas, on Flickr The Third image shows Mount Cook Airlines headquarters in Mechanics bat in 1972. There is a Grumman Widgeon on the apron. 1972 by Harry Follas, on Flickr Here is a closeup of the Widgeon Widgeon_1972 by Harry Follas, on Flickr

Using the Overbridge over the railway line as a common reference, and comparing it with a current Google Earth view, the long, angled breakwater in the early shots appears to be the Eastern edge of the Fergusson wharf container terminal today - the TAT / Sea Bee Slipway is constructed East of the original TEAL slipway. All that original terminal and hangar area is now lost under stacks of containers. The TEAL hangar does however survive, shifted to Mt Wellington.

It’s interesting too…you can see the vehicular ferry to the left in the first photo, reclamation has already started by 1950…

Shorty. I asked about the Pan Am terminal a few days back on Facebook and everyone seemed to think it no longer exists. This photo is from the New Zealand Herald dated the 14th of January 1938. The flags are at half mast for Captain Musick and his crew who'd just been lost in the Clipper crash.

Perhaps it was the TEAL terminal? Does that still exist?

The TEAL hangar does however survive, shifted to Mt Wellington. I went to see it the last time I was in Auckland. It's a lot bigger in person than photos might suggest. Former TEAL hangar i Interior. Former TEAL hangar ii
