KN-A was NZ4046 But a photo on the AFMoNZ site seems to show NZ4042 as KN-A (check out the port wing) Museum photo
So are my eyes (and sanity) shot or does that look like NZ4042?

I may have the answer. Looking at www.adf-serials.com.au/nz-serials/nzcatalina.htm NZ4046 KN-A sank off Suva on 8 October 1952. NZ4042 joined No 6 Flying Boat Squadron on 25 June 1953 and judging by the markings in the above photographs, it became KN-A whereas on its arrival in Fiji in 1944 it was PA-N.

I think Peter is correct. As with the sunderlands, last letter assignments did change on airframes depending on rotation from time to time. Fortunately for us historians not that often!

Thank you so much. Makes sense.
