Hi Guys, through a pal of mine I met the former owner of this beautifully restored Auster, who allowed a few photos and the recreation of a picture he has of it in RNZAF service. Here are the results. The original picture. The owner has no detail about who the young fella in front of the aircraft was, but it was taken at Rongotai. _DSC5689 The recreation featuring a suitably aged gentleman. _DSC5688 The aircraft. The frame is the original NZ1701, with bits from other former RNZAF Austers incorporated into it here and there. _DSC5698 _DSC5684 _DSC5693 _DSC5711 With thanks to Andy and John for arranging the photoshoot.

There is a story about the boy looking at NZ1701, which appeared in either a newspaper or the Weekly News. I'll have a look and see if I can find it.

Yeah not having height adjutable seats is an issue although the MK6 and T7 do (MOD must have had a word in the designer's ear when the MK6 was on the drawing board!)! And I think this is why some Austers (like my J5F) have the hand brake mounted above this tube rather than below it. I think you could modify the tube but yeah it's a snug fit for the taller people! This is J5F BDY's cockpit based at Ardmore with the handbrake visible on the left ABOVE said tube: J5F left hand Instrument panel by Barry Tod, on Flickr

Baz, it was a lovely flight in the Mk.III with Al - now sadly gone - but it was bloody uncomfortable at the same time....designed for the same stature of Brits that also sailed in the Golden Hind..
