I knew I'd seen that shot before, here it is on the back page on New Zealand Wings magazine. Apparently at the Cocos & Keeling Island, 1962. Exactly what I was thinking having stopped there on the way to Singapore in a Hastings as a young child. Day 5 of the trip Perth to Cocos, refuel, then right around the Northern of Indonesia to late night arrival in Changi.

Speechless. What an incredible array of types, colour schemes, locales...and so many superb images!
I must say I recognised the Sturgeon immediately. What does that say about me?!

What a fantastic collection of types.
The Pakistani Furies piqued my interest especially the diminutive pilot in the close up…
This could possibly be Jackie Moggridge.
Jackie was an ex ATA pilot who managed to keep flying after the war and was involved in the ferrying of many Furies to Pakistan.
Fantastic lady who I had the pleasure of meeting many years ago.
She wrote ‘Woman Pilot’ which has been republished as ‘Spitfire Girl - My Life in the Sky’. A good read especially her Fury adventures.

Last week I interviewed three of the very few veterans still living who were in Cyprus with the Vampires. Interestingly none of them had any memory of the coloured markings on the Vampires seen in those slides you sent. And one of the guys was in the very first batch of pilots. The only thing he can deduce is that as the Vampires were all second hand and came from various squadrons, they must have arrived there in the array of colours, and the RNZAF engineering advanced party that was sent ahead of the pilots probably sprayed them all silver. It is a good theory but I think we need a little more evidence yet.
