U.S. JET OFFERED
Canberra's Successor (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 19.
An American aircraft representative left New Zealand today after talks with Air Force chiefs on a “model T” jet fighter which could replace the Canberra strike aircraft.
The plane is the Douglas TA4E Skyhawk subsonic single-engine light attack fighter.
The salesman, Mr J. G. Armstrong of the Douglas Aircraft Company, said his plane was cheap but had powerful strike capability. The Skyhawk is at present being used in a shore and carrier-based ground support role in Vietnam.
The model which would be available to the R.N.Z.A.F. at a basic cost of about £300,000 would be more powerful and modified for more stable operations from airfields.
Mr Armstrong described the new plane as a “Model T” because it was cheap and would be effective in small wars for many years. It could carry more than its own weight in bombs. Alternative armament loads included napalm, air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles, and a high explosive bomb.
Mr Armstrong said he had sold 10 Skyhawks to the Royal Australian Navy and hoped to sell it 10 more.
