Gloria Lyons, for me at least being a diehard P40 fan to see this famous machine in all her glory was well "glorious!" So good she remains in her "un restored" state to get up close and personal is simply put an honour! So grateful to those who have played there part in sharing her and especially to Mr John Smith. Old aeroplane fans across the planet are indebted to his insight, I have said it before there should be some sort of award in recognition of what this person has done for aviation history not only for New Zealand but across the world. Just when you think seeing Gloria Lyons in person was great, I’m chatting with a good friend of mine about aeroplanes and he mentions he has a picture of his grandfather with an old aeroplane. I’m looking at the picture and I couldn’t believe my eyes! The chap closest to the wing is John Walker Robertson, (born 1923 in Greymouth) trained at the Delta in Blenheim, don’t have any other details on the other chaps? Would be very be interested if anyone here could shed more light on these fellows? I’m guessing someone maybe able to work out where the pic was taken by the hangar in the back ground? This was the cherry in top of the cream on top of the cake!

This very same photo appears in Ramon K. Trollope's third volume of Tiger Country. It was taken at RNZAF Station Harewood, circa August 1944, where a Harewood maintenance crew prepared the aircraft for display in Cathedral Square for the Victory Loan Appeal week display. It went on display on 28th of August 1944. The man on the far left was W.C. Edward. The photo was supplied to the author by Eric Edward.
