There used to be a 4.5 inch Gun at Maungatapere west of Whangarei.
Yes it would have been nice to safe Achilles but it would never have been looked after very well by the Navy...
They have a chance now to have the most originial ML in NZ but they don't want it. They can't even let the owner copy or re-install most of the bits and pieces they have out the back that actually belonged to Kuparu.
Originally Kuparu was going to the Museum but they were going to cut her in half from Bow to stern. Problem with that idea was she would fall apart so they ditched her...
So Achilles would have still ended up as scrap in the end I think...
As for the 4 inch gun from the Kaniere, that to is sitting out the back in the weather for no one to see. Might have been better off staying at MOTAT...

Back in June when I was in Auckland with my good mate Bevan Dewes we were on a mission, in a truck that we'd borrowed to shift something that had been purchased for his company. Bevan was driving and I was in the passenger seat. As we went though an intersection I noted a big gun turret from what was clearly a naval vessel. It was in an industrial-looking yard on a corner, and from the height of this truck cab we got a good view of it. The problem is neither of us recall exactly where it was. We were in rush hour traffic and both concentrating on the traffic, and so did not take note of the streets where that was. All I can say is it was somewhere between Panmure where we picked up the truck and Papakura.... Probably more southerly in that stretch, and I have no idea what road we were one, not the motorway, just wherever the GPS was taking us. Does anyone know about that turret? Was it from a Leander frigate? Or is it one of the Achilles turrets? As emron said,... _DSC5064 _DSC5062

There used to be a 4.5 inch Gun at Maungatapere west of Whangarei. It's in the Packard Motor Museum now. There's also a Type 271 radar dish from Achilles somewhere. It used to be on display at Motat, but dunno who has it now.

Thanks for those photos Grant. No worries, Dave. I liked the Leanders and the Rothesays, neat ships and was having a discussion recently with some individuals as to why the British never preserved a complete Leander, but of course the Rothesay HMS Plymouth was saved after retirement but was sent for scrapping because of the sheer expense of keeping it.

HMNZS Southland was reported as heading to Southland to become a floating museum and restaurant. Never happened.

I saw that it had been temporarily closed for a bit. Some nice wagons in there. It was closed over winter period (except for arranged group visits). It is now open again Wednesday to Saturday (10:00am to 4pm).
