Up, up, and away ....
(N Z. Press Association) TIMARU, April 29.
New Zealand now holds the world altitude record for bagpipe playing. Details of the feat were given by Flying Officer J. Bates, of No. 75 Squadron, R.N.Z.A.F., when he addressed a meeting of the South Canterbury Aero Club on Saturday night. Flying Officer Bates said he set the record in an R.A.F. Vulcan bomber at 46,000 feet over Ohakea earlier this year. The previous record was held by an R.A.F. player at 43,000 feet over Scotland. In deference to the R.A.F., which had helped him set the record, Flying Officer Bates included “There Will Always Be An England” in his repertoire.
