Any idea what this aircraft was? From The Press, 9 July 1975
Fisherman ‘catches’ plane
(Press Association) BLENHEIM, July 8.
An old aircraft wreck has been found off Dieffenbach Point, Queen Charlotte Sound. The machine “caught” by a fisherman in about 100 ft of water, will be raised. The wreck may be that of an R.N.Z.A.F. aircraft which crashed into the sea during a war-time incident in which two airmen were drowned. The Civil Aviation Division of the Ministry of Transport has arranged salvage, but is giving away little information.
“We have made arrangements for the aircraft to be recovered by a diver. Once this is done, those handling the job have been advised to tell no-one, and allow nobody to touch the aircraft,” said the Inspector of Air Accidents, Mr E. F. Harvie, of Wellington. Encrusted with marine growth, the aircraft was lifted to the surface some time ago after it became caught in fishing gear by the Nelson boat Corolu. Her owner, Mr Ray Roach, reported to the harbour board later that the deadweight on the end of his warps broke surface and was obviously an aircraft.
