The new film Lancaster opens in New Zealand cinemas on the 1st of September. This is made by the same team that made Spitfire (2018). I had the opportunity to interview David Fairhead, the director, producer and editor of the film last night. It was fascinating to hear about the making of this epic documentary, and you can hear the interview with David on the Wings Over New Zealand Show here: cambridgeairforce.org.nz/WONZShow/2022/08/wonz-261-lancaster/I highly recommend you make the effort to go and see Lancaster at the cinema if you can. And on that note, NZ Warbirds Association Inc. have a special screening lined up. They say: We are all looking forward to this. Following on from the successful SPITFIRE movie, and our own private screening of TOPGUN: Maverick, NZ Warbirds now offers the opportunity to see the latest documentary from the Spitfire producers. LANCASTER – Above and Beyond 🎫$40.00 pp 📆Tuesday 6th September 🕰️7:00 PM 📌HOYTS Ormiston Preflight refreshments (cash bar): Mogly Bar from 5pm All profits made go to NZWB so bring a wingman or two!👍 Details on the event page. I went to the move today. Very well done. About the aircraft but very much told through the stories of the aircrew (and one groundy) veterans. It also discusses the aim of the bombing campaign and those who now question it's morality. The vets also commented that the way Bomber Command vets were shunned post war really hurt them.

Oops correct. I was thinking more of those who worked directly on the aircraft. Of cause the WAAFs did as well.

I have not heard about that. David Fairhead never mentioned it so I guess he is not involved.

Lancaster - Above and Beyond has been on a very limited cinema release here in Australia over the past month, blink and you would miss it. It is showing as going on sale on DVD only in Australia on 7 December 2022.
Ando, re the "American Warhorse" documentary, last I had heard it had run into some 'creative direction' issues between some of those involved in its creation and production. One of my direct contacts was involved in arranging the Mustangs used for filming in the US. I was also in contact with one of the people involved from the US side of the production some time back and was not particularly happy with their responses regarding the British (who took the chance with NAA and ordered the first 620 examples of the Mustang), RAF (as original users of the type) and Commonwealth Air Forces (users during WW2 and after) level of representation. Offers at the time to put them in contact with some of the very, very few surviving RAF pilots who had flown the sorties on the Allison engine Mustangs, including some of the early pioneering long range sorties, to provide their perspective were dismissed - they already had their USAAF 'ace' interviews in the can.

Col, that is sad news. I had high hopes for the production on the basis of some aerials I had seen. Also had the privilege of sitting next to an elderly FW190D Ace at the Saturday night Flying Legends dinner. He was also interviewed for the production and his memory was incredible at the time. One can only hope now....they actually did include a sequence on Abner Aust from the Pacific Ops. It needs that early RAF/UK involvement to be rounded and complete rather than lipservice.

I got an email a couple of days ago offering 45 days of free access to docplay.com as thanks for going to see Lancaster in the cinema. I haven't see the film at all! I entered a competition to, though...
