I was trying to find the date that New Zealand Aerospace Industries Ltd formed as a company, thinking that it was in 1972. I was astonished to discover it formed in 1945 according to the Companies Register! nz.hkcorporationsearch.com/companies/186897/What was the company doing between 1945 and 1972? |

Didn't know that aerospace was even a word in 1945! And a projected voyage to the moon was perhaps just a glint in the eyes of some science fiction authors then.

Yes, exactly. The earliest use of the word Aerospace in the NZ newspapers on Papers Past was in November 1959.

It's hard to find when the Auckland repair company was formed but certainly it was operating in March 1947 when the Tiger Moth ZK-AOU was registered to them. Aircraft Service (NZ) Ltd went on to be one of the first aerial topdressing companies in the North Island. They sold out to James Aviation in 1965. James Aviation Ltd retained all the companies that they took over and the registered office of these companies became Rukuhia Airport. In 1955, Aero Engine Services Ltd was set up to overhaul Continental engines for Fletcher FU-24 aircraft and they also overhauled other engines. I think the ownership of that company was Snow Coleman and Ozzie James/or the owners of James Aviation Ltd. When NZ Aerospace Industries Ltd was set up, it was a four way group of Air New Zealand Ltd, Air Parts (NZ) Ltd, Aero Engine Services Ltd and NZ NAC. It is possible that Air New Zealand Ltd did not want be directly involved with building the aircraft and their shareholding became Aircraft Service (NZ) Ltd which Ozzie James probably sold the paper company to them. Air New Zealand Ltd was formed in 1965 and was merged in 1978 with NZ NAC. At sometime, the company name of Aircraft Service (NZ) Ltd changed to Air New Zealand Ltd and I think that can be found in the companies register. Somehow both Air New Zealand and the heritage of Pacific Aerospace Ltd claim to have started in 1945 and it's because of Aircraft Services (NZ) Ltd which had no physical connection with both companies, just a piece of paper that moved sideways a couple of times |

Aicraft Services was formed in 1945 to convert ex Air Force Tiger Moths for civillan use and do general aircraft engineering and repairs.They formed Auckland Aviation Services around 1949 to keep the topdressing seperate from the engineering.But later it all went back back under the Aircraft Services name.They had a crack at getting the contract to assemble the first 100 Fletchers but lost out to James.
No doubt after James bought it Aircraft services was just an empty shell company they used to start other enterprises with.
Stretching things a bit to claim in 1945 they had any thoughts to use Tiger Moths for Aerospace activities.
