I just came across this shot obituary in The Press, dated 25th of August 1978. I was not aware of any RNZAF Nursing Sisters in Singapore during WWII, nor that any had been captured by the Japanese. Does anyone happen to know more please?
Maori elder dead
Mrs Maia Williamson, an elder of the Ngaitahu tribe and a Justice of the Peace, died at her home in Christchurch recently. She was aged 74. Mrs Williamson was brought up in Dunedin. During the Second World War she served as a nursing sister with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. She was captured by the Japanese and sent to Changi Prison. After the war she worked as a social worker, helping girls in trouble with the law. Mrs Williamson is survived by seven step-children.
