Here is a clearer version of that photo from the AFMNZ. PR5237 Informal group of No. 15 Squadron pilots with a Corsair. Green Island.

Good work, that man!! Thanks for that, Dave…
You know, I’ve made contact with three families and shared what I have with them - Hugh Hamiltons’, Charlie Morrisons’ and, of course, Andy Shanks’ daughter, Debi.. which pleases me no end as the families only had the faintest idea as to what their father/grandfather was doing in 1945…

Good stuff John. Do Hugh Hamilton's or Charlie Morrison's families have their logbooks? I have a copy of Andy's thanks to Debi. She is an awesome lady.
You should send those names through to Matthew O'Sullivan at the museum as he does not have them on the photo.

I think Charlie’s is at the Museum in Chch with other bits and bobs of his gear… including the pistol grip from the Corsairs’ control column!! He flew one back from Bougainville - Rukuhia… Not sure about the Hamilton logbook; I’ll contact Hugh’s son and ask…

Woodward's full name was Francis Kenneth Woodward.
Buster Egginton's full name was Leslie William Francis Egginton.
Mac MacReady (sic) was Noel William McCready.

It's interesting that in both versions of the photo above, Harry Collins seems to have a goatee beard.

He certainly does seem!! I think it IS a beard (unless he drew it on with some dark substance! Highly unlikely).

A few airmen did grow beards in WWII, but this is the first time I have ever seen a goatee beard on one.

Some were allowed to grow a beard to cover a facial scar or injury.

I am sure chits were given to stop shaving if they'd developed tropical sores too.

Though I only ever knew Buster, as ‘Buster’, eh!! I have a sneaking suspicion that FK Woodward was known as Ken… I might be wrong, but that’s a faint memory of a conversation with Dad many uears ago… There’s 4 question marks in there; can anyone help??? I wonder if Pete McKinley, Ken Otter and Keith Wakefield might be some of the missing nmes???
