Hi Guys
As you can see I am moving from one project to another whilst I wait for various bits of info.
This is the Tamiya 1/48 Mustang that I have installed the Aires resin wheel well as well as Moved all the rocket stubs in by half a position as the kit was slightly wrong. The only reason I noticed it was because I am doing NZ2417 and looking at photos of the underwing serial it didnt match up properly where the serial overlapped the stubs.
So just a wee tip for those building the kit.

Also installed the Aires cockpit
I have finished spraying the wheel well and a wee way through the cockpit. I have varied the tone to give a sense of depth and with some fine detail painting and a light wash should look pretty good.
I have sprayed the wells Chromate yellow as per photos I have, and looking at several chunks of wings etc off Kiwi mustangs over the years. Some did however get silver and dark green inner gear doors. But as always, check your references. See the slight greenish tinge to the yellow. I have some older pics of John Smiths yard with a different light and it looks more yellow. So I tried to match it to my eye. I will post some shots of the painted parts hopefully by the weekend.
Cheers
Anthony

You can see in these pics that it looks quite yellow. A right pain to get looking right for the model!

This is going to be great to follow, I'm looking forward to more updates.
The gear doors and wells do look rather yellow, almost mustard coloured. I wonder if it had anything to do with the age of the paint after they'd sat for so long before entering service? Just a wonder.

The paint in the wheel wells and under the wings etc, is that zinc chromate?

Yes it is indeed Zinc Chromate. I have the wheel wells painted now but havent taken a pic yet.....soon
I have been helping a friend out on his 24th scale mustang during the past week, to help him out in a few areas. So I will be back to mine again soon.

Hi Guys
Small update of the wing, still working on the cockpit. Unfortunately you cant see the various post shading of varying tones of the same colour. I am going to next pick out various items for detail painting then a very light wash to give some final depth.
Cheers

Not disappointed so far, in fact very impressed. I am collecting bits and info for the -25 series D 'Isabel III' flown by Jack Cleland with the 357 Fighter Group of the US 8th Air Force in WW 2 and think the wheel well detail set looks like a 'must have' based on what I can see here.

G'day Dave
I will try and load her on ARC too soon. Congrats on the second place mate!! Be sure to get some pics out. As Dave also said you could post them here on the other new modelling sub-board, look forward to seeing it.
Kiwichappers, the resin wheelbay went in pretty easily. I did add some thin plasticard to the front well edges(on the front curved piecs where the clamshell doors close up to) to match the rest of the bay.
Venturas books have some pics of Isabell III if you are looking for info. I built that plane years ago for Wanaka Fighterpilots museum and carved off the fillet myself, but I think Ultracast do a new tail you can easily attach with it all done.
Cheers Anthony

Gosh I wonder what those Mustangs would be worth today? It's enough to make you weep!
Great job on the model BTW

Hi Anthony, Thanks for the info. I contemplated carving the fillet of myself until I found the Ultracast tail conversion and having already come to appreciate Kevins McLaughlins work thought another spend in Gelph would be worthwhile. The pieces are to his usual high standard, well researched, accurate, and beautifully moulded, so no regrets.
I have the Ventura books which cover all Jack's 'Isabell' aircraft and these compliment Tim Neilson book, 'Jack's Adventures' which gives a good account of his wartime service along with some additional useful photos. I have recklessly promised at least Jack's Mustang for a display at the IPMS uk nationals this November but the last of Schrader series aircraft are progressing slower than I anticipated so that may be a close run thing.

Anthony, how's the Stang coming along? Any further progress?
Also, have you any more photos of the RNZAF ones you could share please?

Hi Dave
Havent done much on the Mustang recently.
But I have been working diligently on a 1/35 Bell 412 conversion of my Panda UH-1N(Bell 212). Pretty major job as the kit needs lots of work! It is going to be Helicopter NZ's New Plymouth based ZK-HNI. It is one of those "Mother of all projects" where I am going to town on it. There isnt a huge amount to show at the moment, because the shapes are all wrong. I have completely reshaped the tailboom and built it up in areas to fix various profiles, scratchbuilt new horizontal stabs and am working on the engine cowlings. So although a TON of work has gone into it, it only looks like I glued a couple of bits together.
I have too many projects on the go(as well as a 1/48 KAHU A-4K) and was embarrased to put another one on the forum.
Will dig out some more Mustang pics sometime too.
Cheers Anthony
