Oh all right, I'll play along too. This photo was also discovered, with a post-it note attached reading "RNZAF VIP Air Transport Wing - My Vision For The Future" An example of where the Silver Fern roundel does fit the bill, as the plane will be used mainly for trips to rugby games. The analogy of the silver fern looking like a white fetaher could also apply, but I wouldn't dare suggest such a thing.

Yeah yeah...air brush helen she's really not a bad looking dame in her insignia late at night!...I agree to a point re the flag and similarities between aussis and NZ ...should not be a reason to change...however one could also argue.. what was wrong with the previous Canadian Flag...their flag now is one of the most recognisable in the world...with the Union Flag and Stars and Stripes...etc.. i do respect the strong bond with our flag especially from the war time generation...the danger of changing ...i have to admit ...is the thought of what we would get from this current liberal lot in govt.....something like the Northern Territory flag!!! You guys have artisic talents...how about a new tail fin flash thats has the silver fern incorporated....mind you... how many present RNZAF aircraft have the tradition RWBlue insignia...not many is there? Orions..just the albatross etc...

Even the CT-4E's don't carry a finflash nowadays.
The Super King Airs do however. I think the 757 does too, but may be wrong.
A pity it has been dropped, the red/white/blue symbolised we were Allies, anyone carrying those colours on the fin were usually on the side of good, even the French when they had their's backwards.

what is "backwards" when referring to fin flashes? up until about 1936 Blue always lead on RAF, NZPAF and RNZAF aircraft.... totally off the thread, but I wonder why they changed? I guess when you think about it, what does a fin flash really do?

Maybe the finflash is there to stop Americans shooting at us?

The Kangeroo roundel ....What year was it adopted and did this coincide with the new RAAF ensign...Was there any post WW2 roundels like the RNZAFs silver fern? The kangeroo roundel was actually used in WWII believe it or not, some (one?) a/c of 464sqnRAAF flying Mossies had it painted on the cockpit door. very interesting me thinks. C:\Documents and Settings\Andy\Desktop\RAAF aircraft\De Havilland Mosquito[/img] This pic is from WgCmdr Gordon Panitz mosquito. Panitz was a very successful mossie pilot as you can see from his tally.

There was another earlier version of the RAAF insignia which depicted the Kangaroo standing upright. It was displayed on an RAAF Beaver or Otter aircraft deployed to Antarctica during the 1950's. Certainly not as aesthetic as the one adopted.

That roundel on the Mosquito in WWII is amazing. I wonder if it was he who proposed the adoption of it later, as it's unccannily similar, isn't it?
That aircraft had certainly done some damage too by the kill markings. For a minute though my brain was interpreting the house above the boat to actually be a snowman with a hat and barces! Whoops. No-one should bomb snowmen, they're nuetral.
The alternate roundel on the Beaver is also interesting. It looks like he's boxing, like the Kangaroo on that P-40 nose art on the ex-RNZAF one with Col Pay.

Perhaps the idea for the WW2 roundel came from the kangaroo image on the penny coin of that era. Imagine if the RAAF had selected the emu instead. Would have nicely complimented the RNZAF's kiwi!
