The Wirraway certainly did shoot down a Zero (Dave beat you to this one); but only because the Wirraway was above the Zero, and the Zero pilot didn't see them coming. Wirraway vs Zero in dogfight: I wouldn't want to be in the Wirraway. Just remember what type of aircraft first shot down a Mig-15 in the Korean War....it wasn't a jet....

Yep, that's true; but I bet it was a bit nippier than a Wirraway. I always think of the USN A-1 Skyraider pilots who shot down a couple of MiG-17 over Vietnam in 1966. The MiGs got into a turning dogfight with the Spads - the Spads out-turned them and shot them both down. Now there's a lovely aeroplane: the A-1 Skyraider!

Okay, what's left unanswered, C67 ?

Yes I am a huge fan of the Spad. I'd love Sir Tim to get one here !!
PS I believe it was a Corsair that shot down the first Mig-15 (may be wrong though, but pretty sure)

Questions 3, 4, 10, and half of 2 (motto of 75SQN).

(No.3) Quite interested to find out that they fly airliners..... BBJ and Challenger 604. Are they a VIP Squadron ?

Post by corsair67 on Dec 4, 2005 20:51:00 GMT 12
Correct! 34SQN is the RAAF VIP squadron, and they have no doubt taken Johnnie across the Tasman to see his girlfriend Helen on numerous occasions.
Previously they operated 5 Dassault Falcon 900s and borrowed one of the B707s of 33SQN to take VIPs on longer haul appointments.

Wasn't there some rumours of a Spad coming out to Wanaka 2006?

I heard that rumour too but I think that's all it is unfortunately.

I suggested one may be at Wanaka in the future, based on what an owner told me he'd like to do with his aircraft that's under restoration, but it won't be 2006 that's for sure. I never suggested a date.

Okay, is no.10 anything to do with the Pilatus's of the Roulettes ?

Post by corsair67 on Dec 4, 2005 21:04:42 GMT 12
No, 10 is a bit of a trick question. Think along the lines of silent flight, but with a roaring noise every so often that drives dogs crazy! ;D

Ah that's right,...I read once that the RAAF has a hot-air balloon actually in their possession.

Dave, is the Spad under restoration in NZ?

Post by corsair67 on Dec 4, 2005 21:09:46 GMT 12
Yeah, the RAAF actually have three balloons now because they were so popular at events all over the country. They bought the first one in 1990, but it was retired a couple of years ago because it was wearing out. I wonder if it was attacked by a dog? ;D

Maybe the RNZAF could purchase a hotair balloon and mount a couple of Sidewinders on it. Could be a Stealth attack aircraft. Egress speed from the target could be a wee problem though.... ;D

I reckon that'd be the least of your worries: imagine the effect of firing a 'winder from the basket! ;D
