This comes from the book "Kiwiana - The Sequel" by Richard Wolfe and Stephen Bennett, page 116
"In 1998 New Zealand had 1139 pubs, and Auckland accountant Doug Montgomery claimed to have drunk in every one. His quest to sample them all began at the Kamo Hotal in 1953 and was completed in the Leithfield Hotel, north of Christchurch, 45 years later. It would no doubt take another 45 years at least to visit all the other venues where New Zealanders can now enjoy a drink, thanks to even more liberal licencing laws of recent times."
Wow. What a guy.
I wouldn't want him to be my accountant though
Something else odd beside this note is some photos of old beer labels. One beer is called "Muriwai Beach" (which is in Auckland for those who don't know) but it is brewed by Waikato Breweries in Hamilton. The slogan astounds me, as the label features a surf life saving crew in their boat at Murawai beach (a renowned surf and drowning spot) and the slogan reads "The Breakfast of Champions"
