Nice little booklet I borrowed from the library. An informal history by Peter Norman from Greytown. More a history of the personal and the commencement of 14 Squadron than the airfield as such. Often recognised as NZs first fighter squadron but in fact as the book states 488 (RAF NZ) squadron was first although having a British number was formed in Rongatai on 2/9/41 at the request of the British Govt. I like the uncluttered layout of the booklet and would love to see such a format on other RNZAF stations.

I'd like a copy of this. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Steve. How many pages? And does it have photos?
Might have to track it down. I have Peter's book "Tiger Moths And Butterflies" which is a great read. He has written a few others too.

24 pages and some photos of airmen at Hood and the Pacific. An excellent recognition of local young men in WW2 in the Waiarapa...l I would like to see more on the physical site etc...construction...still a really neat presentation and would make local families proud.

If anyone knows how I procure a copy of this, I'd be eternally grateful. On the front cover is my grandfather Alan Sievers!

Hi Mark, Sorry I'm unable to assist you in procuring a copy of the publication however I knew Alan well when I flew from Hood aerodrome in the late 1960s

I got a copy back then in 2005 directly from Peter Norman, but he is long dead now. He was volunteering at the George Hood Museum and SVAS, and they sold the books there back then. Maybe they may have copies stored away. Might be worth emailing them?
