This Friday night a new TV comedy starts on TV One, called Seven Periods With Mr Gormsby. Normally I wouldn't bother with NZ sitcoms as they are largely rubbish, but this morning I heard one of this show's writers interviewed on National Radio.
He was saying he's really disappointed with TV1 because they have bought this new show, and put it on at the worst possible slot, lat on Friday, opposite the Super 12. He said they have not given it any proper promotion to get people interested and he worries it is doomed.
However, Linda Clark from National Radio says she saw a preview of episode one, and she reckons it is superbly written and played. She said that it is the best thing she has seen David McPhail play ever. Apparently the director has taken him away from his usual character types and really extended him, which has worked well. Apparently the rest of the cast are very good too.
I just saw the advert, and it does look pretty good, so I will give it a go. I thought I'd give others a heads up, since TV1 hasn't done much in that department.
Another indicator it's good - NZ On Air has handed over nearly $1 million to them to make this, an astounding amount. They would never give that much unless they thought it was great and will be a success commercially.
So, hopefully it'll be worth a watch.
(There's a Neil Morrisey comedy afterwards so it's worth watching through for that)

Has anyone watched this yet? I think it's really pretty good for a KIwi sitcom.
McPhail does indeed excel himself as Mr Gormsby, who's an ex-military, stuffy pompous type who returns to teaching after being in retirement for some time. He's old school, doesn't suffer fools gladly and is totally un-PC. Whereas all around him the other teachers are all different stereotypes of modern PC people, so there's lots of room for comic clashes.
I certainly enjoyed the episode I saw (I missed the first one) and I recommend it. The acting overall is very good, including the kids who'd not acted before.
