I heard on National Radio this morning that the balloonist Rick Walczak was making a second attempt to break a world record by flying a hot air balloon over Mount Cook.
I then heard a snippet later in the day that the attempt had failed. This was his second failed attempt apparently. A shame. It'd be quite something to accomplish.

Wow, I saw the shots on TV3 news just now. Some stunning cinematography in documenting the failed attempt. He must have a documentary crew following his attempts. The yellow balloon agains the forests and blue and white mountainside was stunning.
For the record, did you know Kingsford Smith and his crew were the first to fly over Mount Cook, in the Southern Cross.

Did you see Closeup tonight? it is 50years since Harry Wigley made the first skiplane landing on the Tasman Glacier, and there was an interview with with of his mates who had witnessed it. The feature included awesome fottage from a Turbo Porter, and Cessna 185 (Was a Beautiful clear blue day) plus some newsreel of Harry doing in the Auster. Awesome stuff. One of my "Must Do" dreams is to do the flight to the Tasman and ski down. I was kinda drooling watching it......

I missed it I'm afraid. A pity.
Of course Wigley's landing 50 yers ago wasn't the first. A Fox Moth did it in the 1940's. One of the WAAF's I interviewed for the Cambridge project was onboard!
Mind you, it wasn't able to take off again, and had to be carried off by hand in several bits!
