Aeronca Champion 7EC ZK-BPW. - I was responsible for pulling the fabric off it in 1992 to assess it for rebuild at Gulf Aeronautics - looks like absolutely nothing has happened since then. Would make a great project for someone - however the owner at the time I knew it had some issues. The aircraft is actually a real beuty - I would have loved to get it going again. - nice to know it is still around.

Ahh yes, Traveler BPW. One of the small group of Champions in NZ. Wonder why they were never really popular? Last listed owner L & J McCarthy, Te Kauwhata Cancelled as revoked by CAA 8May01 When I knew it, it was owned by Jim Bergman. He later set up Great Barrier Airlines starting with the Drover. Seen here at Ardmore, July 1968:

Thats the one, a very pretty aeroplane. Structurally it had some good ideas too, better than a Cub in some ways. Would I be correct in assuming that the colour scheme was largely light blue at the time the pictures above were taken? When I stripped it down it was yellow and white, but there were traces of blue paint around the exterior.
Gulf Aeronautics were quite keen to rebuild it (it had been in storage for many years) in exchange for a half share with the owner at the time (cant remember his name) and it was to have been "my" project as a training task. we were hoping then to be able to use it as a company runabout and as a "company flying club" machine. Unfortunately the owner was an alcoholic (alledgedly) and would disappear into a haze for a period, and never paid the bill for the assessment work. BPW sat around in the hangar for years in exactly the state shown until Gulf closed down.
Personally this was a huge disappointment, but was quite influential in that it got me thinking about small taildragger projects, and that eventually lead to the start of my Adventurer homebuilt project. Once again, it is great to know it is still around, although frustrating to see it has not progressed in 14 years - maybe if I ever finish (and pay off) CKE, BPW could be the next project! (I am open to sponsorship....)

I flew in this Champion at Middle Districts Aero Club in the mid 60's. It was a scenic over Palmerston North for my 8th birthday. Then it is was a very pastel mint/tealy green on top of the fuse and a darker mintyeal green below, white wings and spats. The top half of the fin (on the diagonal) was orange. I can't attach the photo as its my own and no attachment button on this thread.
