Can anyone tell me if any interesting aircraft like the Antarctic aircraft, foreign airliner etc will be landing or taking of from Christchurch Airport this Thursday the 18th. I am picking my new car up so seeing I am driving down from Blenheim it would be good to know if there are any interesting aircraft in the area, will make the trip if I could get some neat photos

I go checking everyday as i work just a block or so away. There is a C17 there most of the time with US Heks coming and going. Mondays and Fridays the 757 comes in around 11am for it's usual SATS flight. not sur eif it everyday but Emirates A340 sits on the ground for quite afew hours, apparantely cheaper to do a crossing and park here than sitting at sydney all day. depending on the time of the day, good photo positions are, 1, drive right around past the international terminal, go about 100 metres past it and turn a sharp left, ya can pack there and nudge the lens through the wire fence in places. 2, go along past the antarctic centre and turn left passed th fuel farm, keep going right around to the camper van rentals and ya can get some good close shots there. these are for parked aircraft. Other wise for taking off and landing there are numerous spots around the perimeter roads to get good views. There are lots of places where one can launch a surface to air missile from and race away.

If you keep your eyes peeled early morning you may see Helen Clark fly out on a Hercules headed for Scott Base, Antarctica. There are lots of places where one can launch a surface to air missile from and race away. I have no comment to make on this juxtaposition.

I think the Herc will be very early as I think it'll be the same one coming back later on Thursday, which will be bringing a friend back from down there who's working there. Unless there are two Hercs operating that day.

The info I got is that they will be going down on a C17. 1 herk in states stripped down to nothing, 2 herks in Napier on Skytrain, 1 must be on phase or maybe group servicing, and another maybe overseas supporting some people. If it is a herk, ya can shoot me down but from I heard it was going to be a C17. Maybe she will like it so much that she will decide to get a few.

Wont be at Chch Airport but I will be flying through with the Staggerwing in tow on Thursday, landing at Wigram for gas as well as to pick up Alex and then onwards to Masterton. Will be there about 1 or 2 in the afternoon.

supposse it would depend on the weather down there. I remember from when we were operating herks from there, it woould be an 0600 preflight, fuel top up at about 9 for a 10am departure. I think the C17's have been launching between 10 and 12, but ya never know. you could ring and ask the tower but being US air force, it is probably classified. RNZAF Air Movements which is right there would know.

I wonder, would the C-17's have a VIP kit. It's difficult to think they'd put an 87 year old national treasure like Sir Edmund in the cargo hold. And I really can't see Clark enjoying it. It's a wonder she hasn't chartered a cruise ship for her enterage at the taxpayer's expense.

At least a C-17 can do 200km/h legally! I'd should think that Sir Ed would love to travel in the cargo hold of a C-17: it wouldn't be half as rough and uncomfortable as some of the places he's been during his lifetime.

The C17 didn't leave the apron all day and never saw a herk there unless he left real early. There was a french air force , looked like a Nord 262, from Nuemea I presume. They usually bring something over for SkyTrain

I never knew that NZ exercises with the French. That's interesting, good news to hear they are our Ally again in military terms.

It was a C17 flight.I took Daves advice and rung a friend of a friend of a friend and found out it was taking off at 9.00am this morning so seeing Im nuts I drove down from Blenheim to photograph it. I left at 4.45 and got there in time to find a good spot. I had never seen one fly before and all I can say as WOW. Good on the Aussies for buying some, I did have an excuse as I picked up my new car and had a lot of fun driving it back so a great day all round
