Neat Pic of the EK 777 landing (I'm biased of course) Ykato
Drove past on my way to the family meeting place out in Drury 4 or 5 days ago, and noticed the Air National fleet still all parked up. Does anyone know if the BBJ is still owned by Bausch and Lomb?
Its been a pain operating into AKL recently..no ILS on 05, taxiways dug up etc etc..at least the last few trips in have been in nice weather..lets hope for more next week :-)

Sorry Slackie...fortunately for me, the "automagic's" in the 777 get me down to almost CAT 1 minimums on 05..even when the VOR is turned off. As for the taxiways.....

Sorry about the quality... only had my cellphone on me... but this showed up just north of the aerodrome today... not your usual sight in the Auckland skies!

Awesome! There was a photo of that same twister on the news too. Are you based in Auckland tower permanently now Mike? or just visiting?

Great Pic Slackie, I remember seeing something similar when flying past morrinsville many years ago. Out of interest, do you guys have primary radar in the twr? and like the US does it show weather returns?

We have SKYLINE which is an amalgamation of primary and secondary radar, but all weather returns are filtered out... so apart from looking out the window and asking you guys we have no help with weather reporting. Having said that some big cells give primary returns, particularly when they are spitting and sparking. In the Intl Twrs we don't have a MetService display, but instead have wind direction and strength displayed on Vaisala dials. We do have access to cloud height information but that is only valid immediately above the station so only gives an indication as to what the cloud might be.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that if the ATIS/METAR appear to be wildly different from what the actual is then the pilot is in the box seat and should let us know so that we can update our reports (somewhat like how the MetService update their "forecasts" after we submit a METAR!!).

While spotting the other day I was lucky to catch the Vintage work horse with the current work horse at AKL! Sorry about the heat haze but the Dc 3 looks good even today where ever I see her. Cheers

Korean Air laid on a 747 today instead of the 772 that usually does this service. The special paint scheme lettering is "Passionate Wings to Culture" "A Proud Sponsor of The British Museum" Cheers
