The next big airshow coming up in New Zealand will be Warbirds Over Wanaka 2006. The show is held over Easter weekend, with flying on Good Friday the 14th through to Easter Sunday on the 16th of April, 2006. Is anyone from this forum planning to attend? To get accommodation in the district you have to book well in advance so be in early. I think it's a great show but it's a considerable expense to first get to Wanaka (from virtually anywhere, esp. the North Island) and also for the entry tickets. But going on the one I have attended, and all accounts of the other shows I've seen read and heard, it is well worth saving up for. They do put on a fantastic show and have a wonderful collection of aircraft from across NZ at each WoW show. Plus there are always overseas stars too. This year already they've confirmed the female world aerobatic champion Svetlana Kapanina will be displaying there. I wonder who or what else may be coming from offshore. And though the official website (here) www.warbirdsoverwanaka.com/doesn't mention it, I'm sure the OFMC's LA-9 and Yak 3 will also display plus I'm sure the Corsair, along with the confirmed entires of Spitfire, Hurricane and P-40's. So, who's up for Wanaka then? Are you going? Have you heard any rumours?

Latest news of the airshow, announced today - Ray Hanna's Yak 3 will indeed make its debut at the show! This is from the official website
5 October 2005:A Russian Yak-3 fighter from World War II will make its airshow debut at Warbirds Over Wanaka next year. This particular aircraft is one of only a handful in the world which has been converted from a Yak-11 to a Yak-3. This conversion was completed by Pioneer Aero Restorations in Auckland. "We are pleased to confirm that a Yak-3 will be making an appearance at Warbirds next year. We haven't seen one in the skies over Wanaka since 1998, and we are sure it will captivate the crowds at next years show." said Gavin Johnston, General Manager of Warbirds Over Wanaka. Yak-3's are famous for their high power to weight ratio, making them one of the Russian's smallest and lightest fighters. By 1946 Yak-3's were a part of Air Forces in many European countries such as France, Yugoslavia, Albania and Poland. This aircraft was originally owned by the Egyptian Air Force and was purchased by the late Mark Hanna in the 1980's then shipped to Russia. From there it was relocated to England where it remained unworked on for ten years. The aircraft is now owned by Ray Hanna and will be based permanently at Wanaka at the conclusion of Warbirds Over Wanaka 2006.

Unfortunately I dont think I will, unless my Lotto numbers come up.... My aeroplane keeps absorbing my holiday money! I do intend to fly my machine to Omaka 2007, and probably Wanaka 2008, so I'll catch up with everybody then! (Of course you could come and see me at SportAvex 06 Tauranga )

My Wife and I are definitely going, even thought it's quite an expense for us, getting over the ditch.
For those who can't make it, I will take a multitude of photos like I have in the past and post them HERE first !!
Cheers

Tigers Blood will be displayed at Wanaka. Kiwi Thunder Group Ltd (http://www.kiwithunder.com) are operating a brand new flying Thunder Mustang “Tigers Blood” a ¾ scale replica of the North American P51-D Mustang World War II fighter plane that is based at Ardmore Airfield,. There are just ten of these amazing planes flying in the world and of these only one is in New Zealand. The Thunder Mustang is built from high-tech modern materials and powered by a 640 horse power Ryan Falconer V12 racing engine. Our Thunder Mustang out performs the original P51 and is probably the fastest piston driven aeroplane in New Zealand Available for airshows !

I will be there for sure. Unfortunately my sisiter in law no longer lives in Central Otago but I've had a motel booked for the last 18 months. I have attended every show from the one day event attended by 8000 to the three day extravaganza of later times. My rumour sources never prove reliable so I rely on the official website. Purchase a digital camera for the 2004 show, when time permits I'll set up a website with these ground photos.
