Sorry for being a bit off topic and as promised a photo of the rabbit hole the lady fell into at Wanaka. I suspect the chair started to give way and when she stood up the ground just collapsed under her and she slid in to the hole up to her knee. I remember when driving out of the car park area in my rental car having to avoid some quite big holes that had been part of rabbit burrows and collapsed. This must be a real problem for airports around the country and even where I live in the city I go for a walk at around 5:45 am through the Auckland Botanical Gardens(Ellerslie Flower Show venue is on part of it and closest to where we live) I see 4 or 5 rabbits every morning. The dog owners have fun and I remember one morning recently a couple taking their Spaniel for a walk and he caught the scent and the chase was on with rabbit moving at high speed in to the bush clad area. See these two critters large as life photographed just a couple of days ago and I bet they moved quick when the dog owners came past! ;D Colin

Well, it was Easter at Wanaka - the busiest time of year for bunnies! We actually have rabbits around the university campus where I work - they are completely tame as there arent many predators around. They are trying to find humane ways to control them before they breed like, well, .... rabbits!

Getting back to the Air Expo at Mangere, I have the whole thing on video (remember them??) if anyone wants to see it. This includes the Se5a "Crash" and the BD-5J nosewheel incident too. The Albatross taking off in the harbour is spectacular alright.
Now I just have to find where I put it. Upon that, what I should do is convert that to DVD.

I was at Mangere but missed seeing the BD-5J incident as I was well back behind the crowd line. I did see the Se-5 incident though - I remember thinking to myself he didnt have nearly enough airspeed for what he was doing, next moment its heading downwards.... fortunately he got out O.K but a was a close run thing.

Chris, is that home video? Or that official TVNZ one? I have the latter, and I spat tacks after buying it. A month after its release on video, TVNZ screened it. Waste of money. Quite good though...

From memory Cliff Tait destroyed an CT 4 or similar at an airshow at Tokoroa. There was also the fatal mid air at the air display at Waihou(nr Te Aroha) involving Stan Blackmore in the late '30's.

Airspeed Oxford NZ279 Crashed at Akaroa at 1130 hours on 15 June 1940. If you travel down the main street of Akaroa looking at the right hand side as you go towards the wharf, all the buildings are quite old except for one building on a side-street corner. That's the spot where the Oxford came down, destroying the previous building at the same time. It's quite obvious, when you know what to look for. From memory Cliff Tait destroyed an CT 4 or similar at an airshow at Tokoroa. There was also the fatal mid air at the air display at Waihou(nr Te Aroha) involving Stan Blackmore in the late '30's. Cliff Tait was demonstrating AESL Airtourer 115 ZK-CXQ, Tokoroa 18Nov83. The 28Nov34 Waihou collision was between Blackmore's Dessoutter ZK-ACJ and DH60M Moth ZK-ADF (flown by Clarence C Waite), which had only recently been imported from Australia where it had been VH-UMR. The Dessoutter was rebuilt, the Moth was not.

And Waite died. Blackmore was not meant to fly in the display, it was meant to be Ted Harvie in his Avian. But Ted had to pull out at the last minute and Stan filled in for him. Seeing a Desoutter dogfighting must have been wierd enough, but seeing one score a kill in a dogfight even stranger. Sad.

The photo shown here was taken at Ohakea, one week after the Vulcan broke it's leg at the Rongotai Opening. It shows the Vampire Display Team taking off and passing the disabled Vulcan on the grass. A short time later, of course, the Vulcan returned to the UK, crashed on landing killing all on board - tragic! Jeff Law Mt Maunganui

The "Legend" that this Vulcan crashed on return to the UK is incorrect - it was a completely different aircraft on a round the world flight. This one got back safely. Unfortunately this inaccuracy has been repeated so many times and even been published in some books that it has become an urban legend.
