When I was a Cadet our SQN had a scholarship system for gliding and power flying. Gliding got me off to a good start in aviation, and gave me basic skills that later saved a lot of time and money in aeroplanes. If you are contemplating which aviation course to do first, I recommmend a gliding course. I instruct every year at the ATC National Aviation Course (RNZAF Woodbourne). This course is awesome. It consists of a navigation and a power flying flight. This is one of the best starts you can get to an aviation career. There are scholarships available to all cadets who are successful in their applications; scholarships from the RNZAF, Air NZ, Safe Air, Walsh Memorial, RNZAF Association, to name a few. Even if you have to make a contribution it is minimal! Have any of you attended any of these courses? Any photos or memories to share? I have to go flying now (such a hard life!)

OK I give up, you guys are far too quiet. Is there anyone out there in ATC land?

A couple of those photos are mine, were they scanned from a magazine as they were in Aviation News and Airforce News?

They come from a CD produced by the course organisers, and also some from my personal collection. Which pics are yours, and is it ok for the photos to be dispalyed here? I dont mind removing them if not, didnt think about copyrights or anything because the CD came from the Padre. I have seen the article in Av News.

Feel free to use the photos, Just wondered if they were on another site somewhere. I took the one of the padre and the other of the two lads infront of the C130. I will see if I can find the disc I have and will add some more Have been on a couple of those courses myself and it was good to get a good photo of the padre

Those are great shots, thanks for posting them. Yeah, you never know, in the future maybe one of the young aviators will fly a P40. Did you know the Padre was promoted recently to Group Captain and made Principal Defence Chaplain? I believe he is already gearing up for the 2007 course...

That would be awesome Simon. I'll let the 'boss' know, maybe we could use a ride as a prize of some sort? Great stuff, cheers.

No patches or Top Gun parephanalia on my green sack old boy! All the cadets have to wear the flying overalls, and for instructors it is desirable but not mandatory, the course being of a military essence and hosted by the RNZAF. Glad Adam didnt come out of that series of photos unnoticed too!

I presume you are too young to apply for power flying? Believe it or not, it is actually cheaper for you to go power flying rather than gliding (unless you can get a gliding scholarship through your squadron). It's worth asking your officers about the National Aviation Course, if you're keen but not yet 16, you can do the Naviagtion component of the course first. Food for thought.
