Help I need wing tip smoke generators It is not possible on the Thunder Mustang to generate smoke with diesel oil over the exhaust stack so I need wing tip smoke. I have googled and googled with no luck. Any body got any smart ideas? Hope to be up a runing with wing tip smoke for next years air show circuit.

Checking on that for you. Someone in the US has a Mustang with smoke generators and makes them. The Temora Aviation Musuem has a pair of Cessna Dragonflies which have wingtip smoke generators. They might know. www.aviationmuseum.com.au/Kenny Love is the CEO: Kenny Love <K.Love@aviationmuseum.com.au>

You could try these guys Simon. www.sandersaircraft.com/Would be handy if the Thunder Mustang had hard points or rails. It might also be possible to fit a removable wing tip that would take an electrically fired smoke grenade, the only problem with having smoke grenades is that they tend to get quite hot.

Those smoke grenades also make a lot of mess too. Well, they do when they're purple and are thrown into a caravan!

Simon This guy uses some kind of smoke generator that maybe suitable? N320AM is the reg. The company that makes the little jets may have a smoke generator. When I first went to their site after spotting the Jet-Man link I am sure they had smoke generators on their list. Doesn't appear to be there now but worth a try and sorry it is not in English. www.cat-ing.de/turbines/Colin PS Just found this shot and cropped it small. Looks like some kind of pyrotechnics and he did have a night show. Still that might open another door for you?

I rmember seeing the Sanders owned Sea Fury with those smoke generators and wow was it impressive. The Thunder Mustang would steel the show by an even bigger margin with those fitted.

I've just been thinking what would be involved in designing / building a set of Smokers suitable for a smaller aircraft. Based on the exhaust smoke systems and theatrical smoke machines that I am familiar with from AV technician role, the basic requirements are a heated tube through which air is flowing, and into which smoke oil is injected as a stream (not atomised - that will create flame) The key issue therefore is to find a heat source suitable for the size of installation. Electrical elements would draw too much current, which is why those "smokewinder" - type systems use avgas combustion heater systems (like the old Sothwind cabin heaters used on light twins) Once you have a hot tube, the smoke oil injection is very simple (fuel pump and small diameter tubing). I have been thinking about gas burners using small disposable bottles and whether the concept can be made to work. Airflow isnt an issue - the Thunder Mustang has plenty of that! Might have a play around when I get some time. Pyro smoke canisters are easier, but are expensive, messy and difficult to control (once on, they stay on - until they burn out) I think you also need a labour dept pyro license too.

Bruce, how about a small unit running a model aeroplane glow plug, small battery pack, fish tank pump etc etc. Could be run remotely using a servo or by cable and switch.

I just got a price in for smoke generators USD $50000.00 ouch and got a price for second hand of USD $25000.00 so thinking Bruce’s idea of building seems to be the way to go.

Hi Simon,
I'm just wondering if you guys have gotten any closer yet to a solution for the smoke generators?

I have a concept that looks promising and did try building a prototype. I need a gruntier fluid pump though (something like a fuel or hydraulic pump) before I build another prototype. As can be seen though, getting the fabric on my Aeroplane is the main priority now, but I'll get back to it in a few weeks.

Hi Bruce,
Thank you for your continued efforts. I have been crazy with work of late so have had no time to work on smoke generators. I need to come and see your fabric progress which would be a good opportunity to catch up. Let me know when might be convenient.

To reactivate a thread- Simon, it's Ryan.. I am thinking of ways to provide smoke to the Thunder Mustang.. I have a few plans, none of which are sadly true plans at the moment but i will keep you updated on weekends.
