Noted on the CAA register for August is one these - registered to Mr D Brooker (owns the purple Giles G202 if I recall correctly). Not knowing what it was I did some more research and note that the MX-2 are used for competition aerobatics and more interestingly they seem to be reasonably popular for Red Bull Racing (I thought they mainly used Extra 300s - they do look similar). Is Mr Brooker going Red Bull Racing? Heres hoping. Heres a web site that I found interesting regarding the MX-2 and other Red Bull Aircraft. www.air-races.com/aircraft/MX2.htm

Doug isn't going to go Red Bull racing, but his MX2 was being assembled by Avspecs last time I saw him. I believe Doug was turned down from the opportunity to compete for a place at the races because of his age. Maybe Richard Hood can shed some light on this, but that's Doug's slant on it. Has the aircaft flown yet? The Giles was going to be put up for sale I believe.

I shall miss his extraordinary displays in his Giles ZK-NUT if he does sell it. His flying in that aircraft is outstanding. I hope he will continue to do public displays in his new aircraft.

I think Doug has every intention of continuing his display flying and comepting in aerobatic competitions around New Zealand.

Yes will miss the incredible roll rate of the Giles but no doubt the MX-2 will be as good if not better being a newer design.
Pity about the Red Bull - would love to see a NZ competiter and even better a round here - maybe somebody can organise a round in the Waitemata or Tauranga Harbours?

I was speaking with Doug the other day. He was mentioning keeping the Giles for a bit. The MX is essentially a re design of the Giles using Carbon Fiber and has a much better power to weight ratio with the carbon and Lycoming 540 engine. Most of the other competitors are using the Edge 540, it seems to out perform the Extra by quite a bit, but Nigel Lamb has been using an MX.

I saw Doug's display for the first time at Omaka this year, and was very impressed. No doubt his display will be even more impressive with a new aircraft with a higher power to weight ratio.
