As an aside, I never get people to purchase simple external hard drives any more - you are much better investing in a NAS which is basically a smart hard drive attached to your network. Basic ones only have a single hard drive, but more expensive ones can have multiple drives which replicate data in case one of the drives fails. They permanently on, but use less than 10-20 watts most of the time so are not expensive to run.
I set them to back themselves up to the cloud overnight - normally to Amazon's storage service which is only $0.01 per gigabyte (to the US, $.012 to Australia if you don't like your stuff stored in the US).
Synology are the brand I tend to recommend, they are reliable, easy to use and only make NAS devices. They also ensure their updates of software work on their old models unlike most vendors.
Something like this is perfect (this one has hard drives included but you can buy them barebones if you already have hard drives)
