This afternoon I was listening to 'Afternoons with Jim Mora' on Radio NZ National and during the segment called The Panel there was a guest on there from Levin who's apparently a prominent kite designer and maker. His son has just been given $10million by Google to continue experimentation of an idea they're working on to produce electricity by flying kites. They are talking about massive kites, in the thousands of square metres! They will be flown by robots on big steel cables, and somehow they will produce loads of electricity. Apparently more efficient, more production and quarter of the price of wind turbines. I thought I'd put this in the experimental aircraft category, as they are really. You can listen to the interview here (roll down to The Panel, I'm not sure which part, 1 or 2 www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/afternoonsNot going to be good for airspace though, if it takes hold there will have to be no fly zones where these are tethered.
