They did use the re-enactors who come every year to the Cambridge Armistace, because I was talking to a few of them at the 2004 Cambridge event and they'd just filmed it. They loved the experience.
That Dak has done a bit of film work now - including its couple of Eta Ripples adverts and some reality TV stuff over the years. I hope it gets a bit more too, keep em flying!

That's quite correct, it was some great footage of the Skyhawks down low hunting the bush. When I saw it it reminded me greatly of the scenes in Bad Blood when the RNZAF Tiger Moth was hunting mass-murderer Stan Graham.

Skyhawk and Tiger Moth have some things in common: they're both old designs, and I probably wouldn't want to go to war in either of them! ;D

And both have been the front line of defence in NZ at different times.
I was referring to the scene situation rather than similarity in aircraft...

According to Ivan's adf.serials page on RNZAF C-47's, NZ3531 was "Broken up at Ardmore during November 1983 and parts sent to Cook Islands for use in film production."
What was the film this appeared in? Was it the Silent One, which was made there, released 1984?

I dont think it strictly "Appeared" in the film, but its propwash did - it was used as a really big wind machine to simulate a Hurricane!

There was the 'Travelling on' commercial in the early nineties, advertising beer or petrol, I can't remember which. It was a montage of a band travelling down the country to a blues tune, which I think may have been done by Midge Marsden. In addition to featuring the DC3 at Mangaweka, there was also a shot of the band on the runway at presumably Ohakea, fingers in ears and ducking as an A-4 made a low pass down the centerline from behind the camera before disappearing rapidly into the distance. There was also an episode of "The Kids from O.W.L", a childrens adventure series from the early eighties that involved A-4's in an episode. From memory they somehow contrived to have the half paralysed kid trapped as the sole occupant of an airborne A-4.

Ah yes, I remember the Travelling On advert. Mobil I think. It was indeed Midge Marsden, and I'm sure I'm right in saying that he was with two other blues singers. One was female and I don't know who she was, the other was none other than that US blues legend, the late Stevie Ray Vaughn! They had met while Midge was touring in the USA, and Stevie came out here to do the advert with him. Was the Skyhawk scene near Waiouru? I cannot quite recall that. I know the advert was really long for the time, and then eventually an edited version ran.
I don't recall The Kids From O.W.L. at all.

Sleeping dogs with the A4s firing all 9, 19 shot launchers in ripple salvo. That must have been a sight to see.
Apparenlty Roger Donaldson went up in the chase plane to do the filming himself. After the rocket run he looked at his camera and realised he had the aperture closed right down by mistake. You'll see in the film that the scene looks quite dark, but the good thing about it is that it made the rocket eflux stand out much better.

I thought I'd list some more shows that the RNZAF has made appearsnces in on TV. Can you add more?
- 1975 - Scribbles This show was described as "Entertainment and information for the six to nine year olds", and schools were encouraged to send in art, poems, stories and all sorts, including questions. Each week had a specific theme. On Tuesday the 16th of September 1975 the theme was Air Force. Presenter Cathie Harrop visited the RNZAF. It was a 35 minute show, so I wonder what was in it. I assume you went for a flight as a photo in the Listener shows her in flying overalls and standing in front of Harvard NZ1096.
- 1996 - 'The Way We Were', Paul Holmes was host and apparently presented an episode from inside the cockpit of a Hercules at Whenuapai
- 1996 - 'Clash of the Codes' a sporting game show, used Whenuapai as its location
- 1996 - Aparently a crew filmed an Exercise Fincastle for a TV documentary from Whenuapai. Does anyone have a copy of this?
- 2008 - "Good Morning", an ANZAC Day appearance for host Brendon Pongia visiting No. 3 Squadron at Ohakea, includes Iroquois
Back in the late 1980's or early 1990's there was a TV series along the same lines as Top Gear, testing cars for consumers. They used to use Whenuapai's runway for car tests often. I don't recall the name but may have been 'The Car Show' or 'The Auto Show'

Did you get the Mig 15 UTI ad for beer? The GIB ejects the pilot but manages to land OK. Ran about 5 years ago and looked to have been filmed in the South Island. A few ads here appear filmed in NZ. Mainly cars, but there is a really clever 'Lord of the Rings' styled one for Carlton Draught(?) beer.
