The old tech wing hangar had a second floor where the tech officers lived. All others had no mezzanine or second floor

Ah yes, I forgot about the Tech Wing hangar (and I used to work in there). Never really thought about it as a hangar as such. Now sadly just a memory since it was destroyed.

OK there is obviously confusion about the second floor. This was a mezzanine floor added to No 4 hangar after he moved in, a lot of the building was done by Phil Murray who was sort of employed by Ahrens. I was also supposed to start work there in the New year but it all went belly up in the preceding December. I heard that the "second floor incident" involved an engine hidden there for which insurance had been claimed. I hadn't heard about the supposed upstairs fuselage. Not getting confused with the "airliner " fuselage are you? I know what became of that.

Thanks for clearing up the matter of where the second floor was Shorty. Do you mean Phil Murray the RNZAF and Warbirs pilot who used to fly Sir Tim's P-40K? I knew him in the RNZAF.

Yeo, one and the same. He went through his wing's course when I was at PTS, despite the fact he had a commercial and was NZ Junior Aerobatic Champ (in his Midget Mustang)

He'd flown topdressers before joining the RNZAF. A super pilot, his Piper Cub routine at airshows was superb. I didn't know him well, bt better than I did most of the officers when I was an AC, because at any opportunity I could I used to chat to him about the warbirds. He was a great chap. I wonder where he is now.
