yes I communicated with Maurie last year and he was most informative, He arrived in Jui about the time my Dad departed so their paths did not appear to cross.
The Squadron had a reunion in 1995 [50 years after it was disbanded] in Wellington, I have a bit of a record of it which I obtained from Wigram.
Would anyone be interested in looking at it - it might jog a few memories.

Mac is very active and is at MOTAT every Wednesday. Maurice has had a couple of knock backs but still very active and certainly a man to talk to .

Mac is very active and is at MOTAT every Wednesday. . Mac and I have some long chats about his days in West Africa, when I have visited on Wednesdays If anyone is interested, he is currently working on NZ 4115 Q- Queenie (or Quebec) at MOTAT. When he flew in West Africa he also flew a Mk III Sunderland Q-Queenie (Quebec) as second pilot, mostly Kiwi crew, with a couple of chaps from various parts of Britain Regards Alan

I have attached 3 pages as a PDF of the Nov 1995 490 Squadron Reunion. It might jog a few memories and/or names might be recognised and located. Attachments:

My father Flt Ivan Davis flew Sunderlands with 490 sqd. Dad's log book shows he flew ML863, ML 844, ML 850, ML 869, EJ 169, EJ 139, and EJ 165. None of the photo's show the aircraft displaying a name, but perhaps they did have names for them? Dad passed away in 1980 sadly, but he did keep in touch with several of his sqd over the years, but I have no idea if any of these men are alive now.

Mmmmm. Sierra Leone is not the most hospitable place in the world. I think there would be easier ones to get. a lot were scuttled at the end of the war. I still can't locate any living 490 members. Any ideas? Hi. I just came across this forum whilst looking for info on Sunderlands in 490. My father was based at Sierra Leone and flew Sunderland ML863. He has just turned 90 and living with me here in Manurewa.

Welcome gazza (and doubledee). Gazza, has your father any stories or memories he would like to share with us here please? Hi Dave I will have a go at posting something he put together recently which will give you a bit of an overview of his service. Both the photos are of him (S J Walker). Hope you can read his handwriting. He was recently interviewed by Bee Dawson. Cheers Gary (Gazza) Attachments:

Hello, I wonder if you can help me. My grandfather was in the RAF and said that it was squadron 490. Now this is the only one I can find with any referance to it. My grandfather was a tail gunner from England.

Hi All, and Dave. Looking for information about my partners father, Joe Williams. He flew Catalinas and Sunderlands with 490 Sqn out of Sierra Leone. Cheers Joe (centre), with his crew of "N" for Nuts

An earlier post, 09 June 2011, suggested Maurice McGreal "still alive." Yes he was then but departed this life on 21st November 2012.

I am looking for flight information/records for 490 Squadron July 1943 through 15 August 1943.
I am trying to identify air activity over Convoys TL-15 and TS-49...and routine submarine sweeps in the area..and for possible sightings of the freighter SS SANTA MARGARITA. This is for a book I am writing focusing upon the U.S. freighter S.S. SANTA MARGARITA who sailed in these two convoys and who spent early June 1943-15 August 1943 on the coast shuttling between Dakar, Takoradi, Lagos back to Takoradi and then to Freetown.
I know Convoy OS-49 was escorted by Squadron 95 and then on 22 June perhaps by 270. I am hoping to put together a picture of the routine work of the squadrons on the West Coast of Africa. Such a background makes the focus on the SANTA MARGARITA more meaningful.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Theron P. Snell, Ph.D tpsnell@gmail.com Albuquerque, New Mexico; USA

I just noticed on Google Maps and Google Earth that No. 490 (NZ) Squadron's home base of Jui is still there - hangar, workshops, barracks, jetties, all look to be still intact. A pity it does not have Streetview. goo.gl/maps/gvM1HsLiNsA2
