I don't know if it has been mentioned but the change of the Flying Training Wing exercise names from RED OWL to WISE OWL in the mid 1970s was because of the internationally accepted MILITARY assignment of "RED" to an exercise of an operational training venture such as the US RED FLAG series. To avoid confusion with the status of our flying training exercises it was agreed to change the name to WISE OWL.

I wonder how they came up with the names Red Owl and Falcon's Roost in the first place.

Dave, Did you ever compile an actual database of the exercises posted? If you did - where is it.

In 1970 or 1978 while on 41Sqn / RNZAF SUS I went on an Army co-op exercise somewhere in southern Malaysian jungle. We deployed an Iroquois. For the SAS it was a big exercise. I was NCO i/c the maintenance team. Problem is that I can't remember when it was. Can anyone give me the details.

I didn't see anybody mention the REFLEX exercises. REFLEX 2 at Raingataiki (Taupo-Napier road) in Oct 1963. I have written about that elsewhere in this forum. Disappointing that in all these years, nobody else has mentioned anything about the REFLEX Exercises. Reflex 2 at Rangitaiki was a very big affair, I was not the only guy there!

Have a look at page one of this thread now OJ, I have updated it. But I am also going to add some articles to the other thread on Reflex Two, which is here
