Those two machines were ex- fieldair Freight machines that eventually went to cambodia. ZK-BBJ was one, Cant remember the other one.... ZK-BBJ (the former NAC DC-3 Skyliner "Gisborne") was Fieldair's last operational DC-3 before being converted into a freighter for Fieldair Freight, hauling parcels for NZ Railways under the Speedlink brandname. As I posted in a thread on one of the other messageboards yesterday, a few weeks before it was retired from topdressing, I managed to bludge a ride for a few superphosphate-spreading loads out of Gisborne Airport with Bruce Thompson, the last DC-3 dung-dusting pilot. He was spreading super up the Waimata Valley that day. ZK-BBJ and another ex Fieldair Freight Dakota (I can't recall off the top of my head what the registration was, but give me a few days and I'll dig the info out) were purchased by Morris Catering who used them as part of a catering contract with the UN in either Sudan or Somalia (not sure which off the top of my head — another bit of info I'll have to dig out unless someone else beats me to it). The owner of the company was shot and killed by rebels and the company folded. The two DC-3s were abandoned.

I believe the other DC-3 was ZK-AMR,last noted in Harare in June 1996. Check www.ruudleeuw.com/tmp-zkbbj-pilgrim.htm for more details on BBJ. I dont think that these aircraft were really part of the AFC.

If the Avro 504 that crashed was G-ECKE in the UK then it wasn't an AFC aircraft. True - it's a James Slade/Peter Jackson deal. ZK-AMR was an ex-RAAF machine A65-21/ VHEWB/VH-PWM bought to NZ by Alan McGreavy for Classic Air Ltd. Ownership was transferred to North Shore Helicopters Ltd. who set it up for Morris Catering Ltd. and their UN contract in Cambodia & Somalia. ZK-BBJ was ex-RNZAF NZ2552 and then NZNZC/Luggate/Fieldair/Feildair Freight before similarly going to North Shore Helicopters Ltd. for the same useage. They both left NZ in May 1993. The only contact I can see there with AFC is BBJ's lease by Luggate Game Packers Ltd. (a Tim Wallis company) 1970-1971.

Wow (excuse the pun) I didn't realise how many aircraft they had over the years. What a huge influence and resource for the Warbird world. Very lucky to have flown three of those.

Lovely photos, gents! Over the weekend I found four more to add: de Havilland Tiger Moth ZK-CCH, now with Sots Ltd of Cromwell, was with Biplane Adventures 02/10/1998-24/07/2001 de Havilland Tiger Moth ZK-BUO of Wanaka Helicopters/Simon Spencer-Bower was operated by Biplane Adventures at one point (I don't know the timeframe) de Havilland Dominie ZK-AKY, long-time Mandeville resident, was also with Biplane Adventures 02/10/1995-18/12/1997 Hispano Buchon C.4K-172, then G-BJZZ and currently N109GU, was to be bought from Robs Lamplough in 1985 and converted to a Bf.109G-2 but the sale wasn't completed; reported on in Aeroplane Monthly's Feb 1986 issue It's undergoing restoration in the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangars. I have photos of it there, but the owner has requested that pictures of it not be posted online. Crossed wires/confusion here - WkNr1342/G-BYDS/N342FH was the Alpine machine that is now with FHCAM; WkNr3579/N81562/CF-EML/G-CIPB was the first warbird Emil to fly and is now at Biggin Hill.

One thing that's confusing me is that ZK-JTL, NZ's sole flying Cessna A-37 Dragonfly, is listed in Gerard S Morris and Warren P Russell's Wanaka Warbirds as an "associate" aircraft. None of my normal sources have been able to shed any light on the Wallis/Alpine connection with that aircraft. Any ideas? Excellent research, Zac. Great stuff. Oops, wrong Bf 109. Thanks Grant! It really does get confusing with the multiple Buchons and Bf110s, not to mention the Polis!! The biggest headaches have been narrowing down ownership trails for the lighter stuff.

Hi Zac, that's interesting about the A-37. I think that's the one that lived in Tauranga - dunno where it is now, but I know someone who used to help look after it there. He might be able to shed some light, or not...

ZK JTL was the one that crossed the Tasman in 90's to participate in the Tasmanian Skyrace against other jets, I am sure it was owned at that time by a chap from the Coromandel? So at some stage she was owned by the AFC? Here she is refuelling during the ferry flight on Lord Howe Island, if you zoom in you can see the masking taped rego on the fin! In 2005 I visited Ardmore on a family holiday and she was in a hangar there for sure. I do remember she used all of the 3,000ft runway to land and nearly too much of it to get off!

There is or was at least one other Cessna Dragonfly jet in NZ, I saw it sitting on the tarmac at Ardmore once years back, but I have no idea who owned it. It was in bare metal and looked quite non-airworthy.

ZK-JTL is still registered with "Jet Trainers Limited" in Papakura but the last time I saw it was in the back of a hangar in Tauranga. The last time I saw it fly was at a Tauranga Airshow about 7 or 8(ish) years ago.
The bare metal one at Ardmore sat in pieces at the side of a hangar for several years and I believe was eventually sold overseas.
I also heard a rumour of a third one at Ardmore at about the same time, locked away in a hangar but never saw any evidence of it.
