The November 1943 issue of Contact magazine notes that a film had recently been made in NZ at the time by the well known actor Louis Hayward - who was at this time a USMC officer in charge of a combat film unit. He later went on to take his unit to film the invasion of Tarawa, his footage becoming famous.
Anyway this film in NZ was made to show people back in the USA what NZ was like for the Americans based here at the time, and it says that a scene was called for where Marines where to be seen skiing on Mount Cook. Only the Marines didn't turn up so they put RNZAF volunteers into USMC uniforms and filmed them instead.
Does anyone have any idea what the film was called? The only wartime service film he made that is mentioned on IMDb is his famous 'With The Marines at Tarawa', was it possibly part of that? I doubt it.
