I found it interesting that the article says "He was afterwards forced down in Holland and was interned, but paid a visit to New Zealand on parole in 1917, later returning to Holland."
I did not know you could get a break from internment. What happens if you did not return? LOL

I did not know you could get a break from internment. What happens if you did not return? LOL Then likely none of your countrymen get parole from then on, a strong incentive to abide by your oath (and for your country to find you and send you back). There was a movie that included this about internees in Ireland in WW2.
