Great pics, Bearcat.
Have you ever come across Roy Watson who wrote about his Tiger Moth rebuilding and racing experiences as well as propliner and 707 freighter flying in Africa (Bush Pilots Do It In Fours)?

Yes, I do come across him now and again. Both he and his sons fly from Bara-G (FASY aka Syferfontein) and most Sunday afternoons his Tiger Moth and Cessna 140 are in the air.

Excellent, thanks, mate. Picked the book up in Jo'burg in Sept '07 and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Interesting camo scheme. Has the Castle insignia been changed?

Interesting camo scheme. Has the Castle insignia been changed? The Springbok was dropped from the castle because of its "racial overtones" and replaced by an eagle. Then the castle was dropped because it was too "coloniast". The current insignia is therefore the budgerigar in a bottle top logo. The Gripens, of which up to now we have received 7, all 2 seaters, are fun to watch, but practically of not much use as they dont have the range needed for African conditions ... and we dont have any air-air refueling tankers. As with many arms deals ... I think we ended up with the aircraft that provided the best "offsets" ...and I use that phrase in the African sense !!!! Still, I guess its better than nothing .... considering that our threat level is about on a par with NZ !!

Bearcat, out of interest, why is the Springbok considered to be a racist symbol? And if it is racist, why is the rugby team still using it?
Almost sounds like in the UK where the PC-brigade now consider the Union Flag to be racist, because people who fly it are patriotic...

Bearcat, out of interest, why is the Springbok considered to be a racist symbol? And if it is racist, why is the rugby team still using it? During the apartheid years, the National symbol for all teams was the Springbok. Because of the apartheid legislation, blacks were not allowed to be picked for the national "Springbok" team, which led to the Springbok being seen as a racist symbol. The fact that the rugby team still uses the Springbok emblem is still today a hot topic and there are periodic calls for it to be done away with. The fact that it is still used in rugby has a lot to do with the Boks winning the 1995 World Rugby cup at a time when there was the most pressure to do away with the Bok logo. These days, with the high level of marketing of sport, the Springbok brand is considered to carry high brand equity and therefore it is most likely this aspect that has allowed the symbol to be continued. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to advertise a rugby game featuring the Proteas vs The Silver Ferns .... rather than the Boks vs The All Blacks !!!

Thanks for that explanation, I had no idea of the meaning behind the Springbok symbol. I just thought a random local animal had been chosen. Interesting stuff.
Proteas vs Silver Ferns would make for an interesting game, one of your rugby teams versus our national netball side. Mind you they might not drop the ball against the South Africans as the All Blacks did recently. ;D
